Why is the Telerik RadControls for Silverlight  Version=2011.3.1220.1040 not included in the .NET tab  Add Reference dialog in Visual Studio 2010? I can Browse to the dll and install it but then the reference contains a path to my component located in Program Files (x86). When I source control check the code in, another developer not using win64 has the reference not referenced since the path is not correct.

What do I do about this?

Hi Haklberi,

All Silverlight 4 RadControls versions earlier than 2012 Q1 (excluded) appear in the Add Reference dialog through installation with Telerik Web Installer or msi package(downloading latest versions through the upgrade wizard does not include the assemblies in the Add Reference dialog). From 2012 Q1 on only Silverlight 5 controls are distributed with the aforementioned mechanism and thus only they appear in the Add Reference dialog.

In short - to have Silverlight 4 controls present in the dialog you must install version 2011 Q3 or earlier through an msi package or the Telerik Web Installer. If your projects are targeting Silverlight 5 runtime you can benefit from the Add Reference dialog in 2012 Q1 and later releases as well.

I hope this was helpful. Don't hesitate to write if you have further questions.

this is kind of a joke i suppose...

most of people are still using SL4 and they cannot add SL4 Q1 2012 reference because there is no telerik controls installer available for that version?

Hi Rafal,

You can still add references to our Silverlight 4 assemblies, even though the latest controls are not listed in the Add Reference dialog. All you need to do is use the browse option.

Hello Teodor/Andrey,

Are you saying that Telerik stopped supporting/producing controls for Silverlight 4?

Is there a way to get the installers that provides Silverlight 4 Controls? At least the 2011 Q3 (1116) Trial installer?

It's mandatory that I use the Silverlight 4 version of the controls in my project.

Does the Silverlight 5 controls work within MS VS Lightswitch 2011?

If it does not, then I **REALLY** need to get the 2011 Q3 (1116) Trial installer back. Mine was removed by the 2012 Q2 Trial Installer.

We plan to buy the Premium collection of controls.. But if Silverlight 4 is no longer supported, then it'll definitely stop the purchase.

Hello Sponge,

Thank you for contacting us.

We support both Silverlight 4 and 5. Automatic installation (msi) package is available just for Silverlight 5. For Silverlight 4 we provide zip file with all necessary resources.

You can download old versions of the controls through your Telerik account. Here is the path to follow: 'Manage products' | 'Trial downloads' | 'Download (RadControls for Silverlight)' | 'All product versions'.

I hope the information provided answers your question. If you need any further assistance don't hesitate to contact us again.

Thank you for responding.

1) Without the automatic installer for Silverlight 4 or when the Silverlight 5-only msi package is installed, would the wizards (invoked when you drag and drop controls from the toolbar to the design surface) eg. the RichTextbox wizard still work for Silverlight 4 projects?

Without the wizards (especially the RichtextBox wizard), I think it's virtually impossible to figure out by myself which dll references and controls to include in the project & UI design surface in order for me to get the MS Word-like interface that has been generated for me all these while.

2) Also, are there any controls made only for Silverlight 5? In other words, are there any controls that are available for use in Silverlight 5 projects that are NOT available for Silverlight 4?

I can't seem to find the GanttView control within the latest hot fix dll set I've downloaded for Silverlight 4. I'd really want to evaluate its usability for my SL4 project.

Hi,

Going straight to your questions:

1) The wizards should work so long as the design dlls are located in the folder the rest of your dlls are located (the dlls only zip has that covered)

2) There are several controls which are not available for Silverlight 4 (including our GanttView control).

Let me know if that helps.

Hi Andrey,

Can you list which controls exactly that are not available for Silverlight 4?

It's crutial for me to know so that I could plan what could or couldn't be in my project & to stop me from getting excited over things that are available for me to use.

Thank you.

Hi,

At the moment the following controls aren't supported in Silverlight 4:
  • RadPivotGrid
  • RadGanttView
  • RadDiagram

You can also have a look at the RadControls for Silverlight roadmap describing our plans for the future support of Silverlight 4.

Thanks for the list. My main interest is to use the controls for LightSwitch. Since LightSwitch is new but unfortunately Silverlight 4 bound, I'd expect that Telerik would further/still develop & support SL 4 controls.

I'm having this problem too ... how can I get the Latest RadControls_for_Silverlight5_2012_2_0725_Dev_hotfix to show up in my .NET Tab (GAC) rather than having to browse to each DLL and manually add the latest while removing the older 0607 set?  Overall, the entire update/install process of Telerik controls (we use both Reporting and RadControls) seems a little "janky" and problematic ... especially the Assemblies that actually conflict with each other when referenced.

Now I know this is just a matter of creating registry entries for VS 2010 -- so why doesn't the Telerik Upgrade Wizard do this for me?

I realize this might actually NOT be preferred for folks using TFS (or version control) since it could result in assembly mixing, but it would be nice to have the option for the Telerik Upgrade Wizard to do this for us if we so desire.

It would be nice to see some polish on this upgrade/install process ... remember, 3rd party controls are supposed to speed up the development process, not slow it down.

Rob.

Hi Rob,

Thank you for contacting us.

First let me clarify that Silverlight assemblies can't be register neither in the GAC nor in the .net tab. The reason is that they target the Silverlight runtime not the .net runtime. Silverlight assemblies can be registered under the Silverlight tab and in fact when you use the msi installation package they are registered there. If you don't use the msi installation package then you should register them manually.

The reason why the Upgrade Wizard doesn't register the assemblies is limitation in the Silverlight support in Visual Studio.

I hope the information provided answers your questions. If any future inquires arise don't hesitate to contact us again.
