[Solved] Sorting on Single Letter Produces Unexpected Results

Greetings,

We currently have an issue where sorting on a column that contains only a single letter produces unexpected results.  The grid in question is simple: we wish to display a table containing a list of users, with columns for the user's first name, last name, and middle initial.  I would expect the sort order  from "A-Z" or possibly blank when sorting by descending order, yet the results do not appear to be in any particular order. 

This issue appears to be present in Firefox, Internet Explorer 9, and Chrome.  From the testing I've done, I've observed that the sort order appears to be different across different browsers.  I would like assistance so that I may resolve the problem and sort the middle initial column in the proper order.
