Hello,

Please forgive me if I am asking a question that has been covered before; however, I did look and didn't see anything recent and relevant.

How popular is Silverlight? I see telerik is pushing it more and more and quite frankly while it might be pretty cool stuff, I personally, do not see it catching on. This is a very uninformed opinion, just my observation. If you ask someone that is not a computer programmer what Flash is they seem to know what it is. If you do the same with Silverlight, you get a "huh" as a response.

I am just looking for some informed opinion.

Thanks,
John

According to riastats.com (and others), Silverlight is installed on about a third of browsers. Flash has been around for 13 years, Silverlight only 2. So I'd say it's already caught on.

From a developer's point of view, I was delighted to find that I could apply almost everything I had learned about WPF to Silverlight. I had a quick dabble with Flash, but found it hard work, and the results were less than inspiring. With Silverlight I didn't have to learn any new languages or development environments, and (with help from Telerik) I could turn out an impressive-looking application with relative ease.

Hi John Stewart,

I want also to mention on very importatn thing. As Steve mentioed Silverlight is only 2 years old and until now the tools we not very usable and good for every day development. But with VS2010 on its way and its design time capabilities we will see how really powerful the Silverlight technology can be. I'm sure that very soon the Silverlight install rate will be much better once the technology is adopted.

Kind regards,
