So as many others have discovered when using Ajax you can easily get the Server 500 error. Neither option makes any sense as for starters why should it work fone when not using AJAX? To me perhaps an adittional property is required to say if it should drill in or not. WHy does it work perfectly fine for NON AJAX senarios?

The suggested solutions don't make any sense. As why should I need to create an additional layer just to use the grid with AJAX as this seems redundant and a lot of extra work in an an application with more then 1 table. Why double the development effort and the maintenance effort?

Next option is to restrict the object so that it doesn't drill in. But why should I handcuff myself this way when I went through all the work to build that relationship in?

Why is the grid even drilling down? Its not being asked to, its being asked to show the data in the table being passed to it, not the tables related internally?

Its a great component, but it needs some intelligence.

Hi,

I believe that there is no grid on this earth that handle this issue by there-self. Why? Because they does not serialize data :). The just use it. As I know, no available .NET serializer cannot serialize object which has reference to itself (I think there is no serilzer at all, which can serialize such object). You can try to serialize such object and send it to client, without using grid. You will observe the same error, which is raised by JSON seralizer.

What I am trying to say is that there is no grid which can and which should take care about this problem. We need to provide correct data to the component. If there is an error, it is our problem as a developers. That's why I am writing - it will be great if there is a serializer, which will take care about this problem, but it should be the Front-end component :).

So why will this serialize?

normally the Return is uncommented and that is what I'm passing to the Telerik grid. So the above code does run and happy serializes the DataTable, but it won't in the AJAX request.
