[Solved] Sell Me WebUI Test Studio

So I've been playing with Telerik WebUI Test Studio for a little over a week now, and I'm not completely sold. Why should I pay $2500 for the tool when the WebAii framework is free? In all the tests I've written so far on the web application I am QA for, I have not seen the Test Studio produce anything I couldn't do on my own with the WebAii framework.

Furthermore, I am concerned about how manageable my Studio-created tests would be through later versions of my web application. I appreciate the page-object model that it brings to the table, but I can do that on my own. I find the Elements Explorer somewhat limited in how it references pages when there is a query on a page, for example. Why can't I work with a page regardless of query or title?

Any thoughts?

Hi David,

These are good points you have brought up, but I would like to bring up these reasons in contrast for WebUI Test Studio:

1) The built in RadControls Translators that automatically highlights RadControls in the Recording Surface Window are rather complex. Without those you need to deeply understand how the controls work and are structured under the covers, deal with the client-side JavaScript calls and so on. This is all abstracted away for you in WebUI Test Studio for easier automated testing of RadControls-base Web Applications. Other available testing features, among them Data Driven Testing, Element Finding and Verification, DOM Tree parsing, searching and recording, are also somewhat complex or tedious to write up.

2) So in terms of productivity, the test creation and maintainability with the WebUI Test Studio is much easier. The Test Studio is designed to simulate realistic user interaction that allows for easy test creation, reuse, and modification for later testing of any newly incorporated additions on your site, along with testing for any possible regressions. This ease of use would allow you to quickly create as full a test set as possible with as many tests as you needed in order to ensure your web site's quality for your company and customers over all features and Web Technologies that could possibly be added to your site.

3) Last but not least the license comes with the full technical support of both Telerik and ArtOfTest Inc to guarantee that all of your testing will be quick and painless, while still being as complete and comprehensive as possible.

As far as the other issue you mentioned, I would like to address that in your other post if possible. I hope this helps in your decision regarding the WebUI Test Studio license.

First I want to thank you for giving us the opportunity to help explain the advantages and uses for WebUI Test Studio.

WebUI Test Studio is built upon ArtOfTest's Automation Design Canvas and It adds full support for Telerik RadControls (ASP.NET AJAX and soon the Silverlight UI Controls) by adding the Telerik Control Translators component.

In addition feel free to download a fully functional (time limited) free trial and experiment with it yourself. We believe once you understand all it's capable of and can demonstrate it in action to your management team, it should be a pretty easy sell.

It definitely can be used for testing cookies, broken links, forms, images, videos, colors, content, and GUI components (radio buttons, checkboxes, push buttons, etc.)! It really shines at functional testing of your website. As for broken links, there are other tools out there better suited for automatically crawling the entire website and detecting broken links however WebUI Test Studio can be used to do this, but it requires some manual programming if you want automatically crawl the entire website. As for videos, it has no direct video features (e.g. frame rate, format, codec, etc.) beyond being able to detect the link to a video file on a web page. The tool targets the HTML and JavaScript given to the browser and how the browser deals with it. It is best used to literally drive the browser just like a real person would. You are then able to example any/all properties of the elements displayed on the web pages.
