Yes, you can remove it by re-templating the selection element. In case you are using the latest version of the controls (Q1 2012 SP1), you can do this using implicit styles as described in this forum post.
On the other hand, in case you are using an older version, you can create a custom theme with all the changes to the XAML of the control you need. For additional information on custom themes, please refer to our online documentation.
