Dear Telerik,
I am trying to use the RadDataFilter in Unbound Mode, and while I can see, and iterate through it's FilterDescriptors in my View-Model, I cannot see how to get the very top level Operator - any clues please?

I believe that you are looking for RadDataFilter.FilterDescriptors.LogicalOperator.
