RichTextBox - Problem with merge fields in document header/footer

I am having a problem with merge fields in the header/footer.  When we use the approach outlined here:

it works with a small exception.  The first time the field is inserted, it does not display until we lose focus from the header/footer.  After that it seems to work properly.

We were able to isolate this problem when a merge field in header/footer in result display mode does not show until leaving the header/footer using our latest 2013 Q1 official version. We have logged it for revision and will try to fix it soon.

Great.  Glad to hear it's not something I'm doing wrong here.  Is there any suggested workarounds I can use in the meantime?
