We are proud to announce the first beta release of our new product line built entirely on top of ASP.NET AJAX.

Telerik RadControls code-name “Prometheus” will be the successor of RadControls for ASP.NET. The new product line represents the future direction of the Telerik web development tools, and is closely aligned with Microsoft’s roadmap. The first version of the suite bears a Beta tag and will be launched commercially in early 2008, after Visual Studio Orcas is released and after Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX becomes an integral part of the ASP.NET framework.

When should we plan on using these controls in production applications?  Should we wait until 2008 to use them in production?

Thanks,

Don

Hi Don.
Related to the FAQ we can use it in production right now.
though components are in Beta, you can safely use them in production applications and benefit from brand new “Prometheus” products such as RadToolTip, RadColorPicker, RadSlider and the upcoming RadScheduler

Forgive my lack of understanding, but since products are labeled "beta", how can we use them in the production? How can we get a development "beta" version?

Hello,

As noted in the FAQ the Beta version of Prometheus is with Go Live license and we fully support production code developed with the new controls. All customers who have a valid subscription license have automatically received a developer version of the Beta.

Hello Ivo!

Thanxs for a prompt respond. I just have to wait a wail longer then.
I , and properbly many with me, thought your statement "All customers who have a valid subscription license have automatically received a developer version of the Beta." ment that we already had updated accounts. :)

I tink you in one way appreciate our excitement for he download even if it properbly takes your time from other things :)

Thanxs for the new nicw products and features.

Btw, could you please make a notice on the web, or perhaps in this post, so we get a message when it is time to update, so I can do other thing today than just hittin F5 :D

All-

You should now see the Reporting and "Prometheus" downloads in your licensed purchases section in Client.net. Sorry for the delay in getting these setup correctly. Enjoy the new tools and be sure to share your feedback in the forums!

Thanks~

I would like to echo Pelle's excitement about the new features.  I was really excited to see that you will be adding a scheduling component to the suite by this summer.

Please don't feel like we are harassing you.  We're just excited to see the new features.  I am giving a demonstration tonight at our local .NET UG and would love to have the new Prometheus controls to show off.  As of a few minutes ago, the Prometheus download is still not available in my account.

In regard to the term Beta.  Thanks everyone for their input.  I had read the FAQ, but was concerned regarding the liability I might face if anything happened in production and it was traced back to the use  of products market as beta.  I realize the term has taken on a different meaning in recent years.  Unfortunately, in some environments, the term itself creates a level of risk for a consultant recommending the use of the product.  Clients don't like to hear that you are using beta components in their software.

Finally, thanks to the Telerik team for all your hard work!  You've done an awesome job with your controls and your support is outstanding.

Don-

Thanks for the feedback. You should find the "Prometheus" download in your account very soon (if not now). The update is running right now.

I understand your concerns about the "beta" tag. While it might not make much difference, remember that the Telerik "Go Live" license for these controls includes full product support. In other words, you won't get the "it's a beta, deal with it" brush off if you have problems with the "Prometheus" controls. We really want to enable as many developers as possible to take advantage of the new features of the "Prometheus" controls, and the only reason the "beta" tag remains is because so many more features are coming to "Prometheus" this year. Hopefully you'll be able to find some projects that will let you use these controls. =)

In any event, definitely share your feedback about the individual controls in the forums as you work with them.

Thanks~

Hi Don,

Thank you for the nice words on our new products and features.

In regards to the term "Beta":
This is the first public release of the new "Prometheus" controls and we are very eager to hear your feedback. We completely support the new bits and we are confident that they can be used in production environment. We are giving dev licenses to all Telerik subscribers and are encouraging customers to start playing with the new controls. It is also perfectly safe to start mixing the "Classic" ASP.NET controls and the new "Prometheus" controls in your apps -- a good course of action is to start incorporating them in some existing apps.

We are very serious about backwards compatibility and we will do our best to not break this code for the upcoming beta updates towards the official release. The core framework is quite stable and we should be safe to upgrade it with new ASP.NET AJAX controls (Grid, Editor, Menu, Scheduler etc). Backwards compatibility is our top priority and we will have primary focus on that.

Kind regards,
Ivo
