To Telerik,

I'm currently using the RadChart (Q1 2011) in a complex scenario where in a MVVM approach I am binding the chart series to the View-Model to create a truly dynamic chart. I am also using a "Telerik approach" custom theme for my application.

Disappointingly, I cannot upgrade my application to Q3 2011 because this release grudgingly refuses to work for my solution. A series of styling issues and cryptic exceptions has stopped me from proceeding any further. You may view the related posts here and here. Frustrated with the breaking changes (why are there breaking changes to begin with?!?), I spent many futile hours trying to migrate my RadChart to the new RadChartView but quickly found that the RadChartView is not ready for real world problems (chart Series are not bindable).

My question is will you be fixing up RadChart so that it will work for Q1 2012 OTB (out-of-the-box) when I upgrade?

-- rant --

This is a reminder to Telerik that if you intend to release new versions, please do the following:

1. Clearly identify the breaking changes.
2. Update your documentations, clearly marking the changes required to get a working solution.
3. Provide an alternative if all-else fails.

I would also like this post to serve as a warning to other developers thinking about upgrading to a newer version. Find out what works and what will break before you waste your value development time trying to guess the errors and end up reverting to an older working version.

Hello Aaron,

I would like to use this occasion to issue an apology for the problems you are having with our product. The issues you are experiencing are due to some modifications that were required in RadChart in order for it to work with a new theming mechanism we are preparing to launch for all controls. These were not supposed to cause breaking changes and thus they were not documented. While this is no excuse for us shipping a breaking change I am mentioning it so it is clear to you that we did not intentionally obscure a breaking change inside our documentation. I am afraid we cannot roll these back either since they will be needed for the new theming mechanism as mentioned.

Given the situation I am afraid the best way we can provide assistance for you would be to examine the specific problems you are having and provide a solution or work-around if possible. For us to do this we would kindly request that you send us a compile-able project that we can take a look at.

With regards to the RadChartView I have reviewed your support communication but I could not find anything in there that would point me to a more specific problem. As RadChartView control is the future of XAML charting I would be very interested to hear about any specific problems you have experienced with it. Q1 2012 will mark the official release of the control and we believe it will definitely be capable of handling most real-world scenarios customers will throw at it.

Having said all that I can promise you we are taking your feedback very seriously. We are commited to always listing breaking changes in our documentation and that the omission in question today is rather an exception than the rule. Sometimes our documentation and release notes are not enough and in those cases we ask our customers to submit a support ticket (rather than a forum post, because support tickets are guaranteed to be answered within 24 hours).

I will make sure your suppor requests regarding these issues are prioritiezed and we will do our best to assist you with the problems you are having with RadChart. Once again, please accept my sincere apologies for all the trouble you have endured.

All the best,
Vladimir Milev
