I have established a custom brush palette for use with my data series, but the pie chart is always rendered with a "shine" effect on all of the elements (looks like a narrow band of altered transparency). How can I remove this? Do I have to completely re-template?

The described effect can be customized through the PieSeries.HighlightBrush property. You can disable it like this:
