I've just tried an app compile for the Google Play put it on my phone, but when I try to install it, one of the access requests is "Development tools, test access to protected storage" - From searching around this seems to be,
"TEST ACCESS TO PROTECTED STORAGE TEST ACCESS TO PROTECTED STORAGE
Allows the app to test a permission for USB storage that will be available on future devices. Allows the app to test a permission for the SD card that will be available on future"
But I don't see that as an option I have control over? I just need to be able to clarify what this means in case I'm asked, and why it's there?
Thanks

Hi Mat,

A quick investigation turns out that is a permission is for read access to the external storage and is automatically granted when the write to external storage permission is used. Currently this permission is not enforced and is used for testing on devices that have enabled Protect USB storage under Developer options in the Settings app on a device running Android 4.1 or higher.

You can safely ignore it for now.

"TEST ACCESS TO PROTECTED STORAGE TEST ACCESS TO PROTECTED STORAGE"
Normally such condition only shows up when we download free apps.

How come this is not shown/ required if I am actually paying for an app?

Thanks

Hello Johnny,

As my colleague explained, this permission is requested only if you have the "Protect USB storage/Protect SD card" option enabled under Developer options.

Apps that are build and deployed on Android via Icenium are signed with dummy certificate and are installed on the SD card - thus the requested permission. Should you sign your Android app with valid certificate and use the Publish option (or change the Build Settings to Release), the app would not be installed on the SD card and would not require this permission (unless the app explicitly uses the SD card for some of its operations).

Regards,
Steve
