Can I push a <myfiles>.rar to Github and open them in Graphite. I tried and failed.
[later edit] Eventually I got the repo in GitHub right. The files & folders started to compress and load. All very exciting. and then.... it failed (yet again) to load. See thread elsewhere.

Graphite only supports cloning/opening projects that have Graphite's own project structure. Cloning an arbitrary GitHub repository that contains just files would fail to open in Graphite, because there is no valid Graphite project in it. Instead, you need to create a project in Graphite and add your files to that project via Graphite's own UI - Add files from Archive. Then you can push the project to an empty repository on GitHub. Other collaborators / team members can clone your repository and continue working on it in parallel, performing push and pull operations to GitHub as usual.
