Hi,

What is the largest process your software can profile?  We currently have an Asp.Net process that takes 10 gigs of RAM and I was wondering if we could profile it using your software.  Thanks.

Hi Nick,

Thank you for your question. I assume you have 64bit Windows. For large applications I don't recommend using JustTrace addin for Visual Studio because devenv.exe process is 32bit so I would suggest using the stand-alone JustTrace application (it will start as 64bit process on 64bit Windows). I guess JustTrace will need a lot of memory to collect a snapshot of 10GB process, but it should be possible.

Right now we are working on an alternative approach for collecting snapshots which will allows JustTrace to work better in scenarios like yours. We expect to ship this new feature for 2012 Q2 release. Meanwhile, you can try our latest internal build. Please find the attached files (unfortunately I had to split the file as the maximum file size is 20MB, sorry for the inconvenience).

All the best,

Hi,

The regular version of JustTrace uses triple the memory (30 Gigs) and then grinds to a halt, it's probably using virtual memory at that point because I'm out of RAM.

I can't unzip these zip files because it says they're corrupted, or my winzip doesn't know how to assemble a file from 2 zip files.  Can you send it to me some other way, or use RAR format or something.

Hello Nick,

I did some tests and confirm your results. There are scenarios when JustTrace needs a lot of memory. We put a task (for optimizing JustTrace memory footprint) on our task list with the highest priority. Unfortunately we don't have resources to implement it for the next build after a few weeks. Probably we will ship the optimization for 2012 Q2 SP1 release. I will let you know once we ship it. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Please find the attached files. They contain the latest JustTrace private build. It has some minor optimizations though it might not help in your scenario. However it will definitely help in scenarios where there are not many objects regardless of their size in memory.

Kind regards,
Mihail
