I was worried about this as well, but tested my compressed assets with IE 8 and they were fine.
My server for the test is Visual Studio 2010's web development server.
On the client side, you might want to restore IE 8 to its defaults and see if that fixes the problem. There might be an advanced setting that enables/disables compression.
