I confirm that what I explained here could be a bug unless it is by design. I checked in the code and locally fixed it to work for me at the time being.
So I would like to post a feature request to be able to configure remote assets (e.g. cdn styles & assets hosted by google or microsoft) in web.config.
So basically anything that starts with http:// or https:// shouldn't be compined with DefaultPath.
