I got it figured out. The file I was trying to use was an xlsx file instead of xls.

What error are you seeing? I've used .xlsx files quite a bit and haven't see any issues.
According to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd797428.aspx, xlsx is the same format for Office 2010 and 2013 (my machine is Office 2013).
