Dynamically Loaded Combobox Selection & Typing Issue

We have a RadCombobox bound to a very large collection which is filtered similarly to Valeri's sample here:

In both that sample and my code, when I search, click on an item, then begin typing to search a second time, the first letter I type the second time disappears when the items are re-bound.

Is there a way to avoid this or work around it?
