is it actually possible to add custom controls, 2 buttons in my case, to the group panel (via template, etc)? i know that the group panel is not meant to act as a toolbar, but in my custom scenario it would be good to reuse the space available.

You may predefine the GroupHeaderTemplate of the grid and define the buttons you want inside. If you want this structure to be available when only a particular column is grouped by, you may set the GroupHeaderTemplate of this particular column only.

thank you for your response but i was talking about the group panel, not the header panel of a column.

You can modify the the group panel template with Blend to achieve your goal.
