Hello Erik,

Bookvar means 'ABC book' in Bulgarian. Sorry if you find the name unfriendly, but since the main purpose of this open source project is mind mapping, we believe that such naming is accurate.

Hello Erik,

As one of the guys behind the Bookvar project let me share with you how the name was born.

In the late 2006 me and a friend of mine decided that we want to participate in a Microsoft students software competition called Imagine Cup. The idea behind this competition is that each year a theme is picked and all projects that are submitted should be somehow related to this center theme. You can check this Wikipedia page for a reference what were the themes during the years. Back to our participation It was already too late to enroll for 2006 so we decided that we will participate the next year.

When the Imagine Cup theme for 2007 year came up it was about education. Having this in mind we have established a team and decided that we will build a tool that will using mind mapping as a central concept and enrich it with educational centric features. This is how the idea about Bookvar was born.

Looking for a good name we wanted to have some educational and also Bulgarian parts in the name. This is where the concept of Буквар (Primer in English) comes in. Peter Beron created the first Bulgarian primer  also known as Fish Primer. It has a whale on this cover. This whale become the logo of our product. Initially we were thinking of naming the it Beron, but then the name Bookvar was presented by one of our team members and we like it very much. Having 'book' in the name was also a plus in order to illustrate the main concept.

So this is the story behind Bookvar's name. It may sound silly as other names in our industry (like Apple, Google, ...) but it is here to stay.
