Hi,
After updating to the Q2 2011 release our automated application tests fail when trying to read grid view row cells. Our test are programmatic and use the White framework. They have been working fine the last year or so. The application runs fine but the tests are unable to read cells. Using Inspect (or UISpy) I can see the row but not the cells. The tests also can see a row but no cells.
The row visible in Inspect has the name of our model class used for the dataitem.
Can you give me some feedback as to what has changed in this area and perhaps how it should not be tested via the automation framework.

Hello Robert Smyth,
Can you specify from what version you are upgrading to Q2 2011? With which version of the RadGridView your tests have been running fine? With Q1 2011 release we introduced lots of improvements to the column virtualization which means the cell creating, recycling mechanism were changed.
In order to help you, I would need more details about your grid and data, how they are bound and loaded. Also, exact steps of the failing test will be plus.

Hi Yordanka,
We upgraded from, i believe, Q1 2011. The tests are running fine using Telerik.Windows.Controls.GridView.dll version 2010.3.1314.1040. Hmmm, is that Q1 2011?
The grid is bound to an Observable collection. Does that help?

Hi,
Perhaps you can give me a code fragment showing how to test a grid view cell? The grid view row is visible but I'm having trouble finding the AutomationId. This is stopping our upgrading to the latest release.

Hi Robert Smyth,
We did some more testing and we were able to reproduce the issue that you have mentioned. The strangest thing is that UISpy correctly reports all rows and cell but there is indeed a problem with the cells collection in White.
We need more time to investigate the issue and we will notify you as soon as we have more information. Excuse us for this inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Inspecting White framework's source code, I have noticed that the mechanism that searches for the cells is looking for elements with "Text" ControlType. As GridViewCell's AutomationControlType is ControlType.Custom, GridViewCells do not meet the condition. Since we do not experience such issues with any other automation testing frameworks or tools, I would advise you to prepare a custom build of White framework, modifying the getter of the Cells property of the ListViewRow class (namespace Core.UIItems) to seek for elements having the ControlType.Custom AutomationControlType. Unfortunately I cannot guarantee whether this change won't break any other features of White. Please, feel free to contact us immediately if any further issues occur.
