Is it possible to use Fiddler to intercept https traffic going from MS Power BI desktop?

Thanks

Hello Mark,

It should be possible, but you would probably need to configure MS Power BI to use the Fiddler proxy. Refer to the following articles for more information about how to set up the proxy via a configuration file.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/data-integration/gateway/service-gateway-proxy

https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Service/use-proxy-and-port-for-connection/m-p/736466

I will look into these docs in more details, but looks like they describe how to configure the gateway to use a proxy. I am having problems in the desktop application and I am not sure it that uses gateway. I think the trick is to configure Power BI desktop app to be proxy aware,

I also tried configuring it for PBIDesktop.exe.config and Microsoft.Mashup.Container.exe.config. Did not work.

Hello Mark,

Indeed the desktop application should be aware of the system proxy so that it could utilize it (no matter if it is your specific application or some other 3rd party tool). I have not found anything to use the Power BI desktop app alongside proxy so I guess that might be something that is not well documented and perhaps you should contact Microsoft support for more details.

I added proxy configuration to PBI config files, still didn't work.

Hello Mark,

Again I must underline that I am not familiar with the Power BI desktop app but still from the answer in your other thread it sounds strange that a proxy configuration for that tool would break other 3rd party programs. If possible the solution should be to make Power BI respect the OS system proxy settings and let Fiddler act as a system proxy (which is the default behavior) - is that possible to achieve via the PBI configuration settings?
