I'm having some issues recording in an external browser (which is required due to a known issue with authentication popups). After watching the video on browser recording, the issue is clear - the Design Canvas User Interface isn't showing up on my browser as it is in the video. Here's my configuration:
Windows 2003 Server SP2 (accessed via RDP)
IE 7 (7.0.5730.13)
VS 2008 SP1
Any suggestions as to what needs to be done in order to get that tool panel to appear?

Hello Steve,
We apologize for the inconvenience this is causing you.
When you mention the "the Design Canvas User Interface" are you referring to the toolbar we put at the top right of the browser window (the one with the Record, Overlay and DOM explorer buttons)? There are a few reasons why this toolbar is not showing up as expected. The simplest reason is when the IE window does not have focus we deliberately hide the toolbar. e.g. when you are actively working in the VS window, the toolbar will not be displayed. Click on the IE window to make it active and it will show up.
Another possibility is that your IE is not properly configured to allow the toolbar to show up. Please follow the instructions from these two vidoes which apply to Windows 2003:

If that does not resolve your problem let's take RDP out of the picture. Please test it locally on the machine without using RDP.

Hi Cody,
I'm having the same problem as Steve, i already saw and did what is in the videos (actually the IE ESC functionality was not even installed) but it is not working still. So, Do you have any other ideas that i could try?

Hello Arturo,
We will check out the scenario on this side, see if we can repro the problem. Could you please let us know if your machine specs are different then Steve's? And are you also using RDP to connect to the server? In the mean time, if you could please use the Recording Browser in Visual Studio if it works for you.

Hi,
This are my specs are this:
Windows Server 2003 Enterprise edition SP 2.
Visual Studio Team System Version 9.030729. 1SP
I'm working directly into this server (the whole development environment is here). The application i'm trying to test is in another computer on the internal network.
Unfortunately i can not use the visual studio version because it does not work properly with the application i'm willing to test. The test application seems to be falling iin to an infinitive loop because of the tested website (the loading just remeins unfinished), the stop recording an any other button of the test enviroment just do not do anything at all but the visual studio works fine.
When the website starts and a users logs in, the current page opens a new window and closes it self, the new window gets opened two time one outside the visual studio and the other inside in the out side window i can work perfectly fine with the application but nothing gets recorded. In the inside page, i can not do anything else at all. The track all HTML pup ups is on just as the alert dialogs. So that are the reasons why i want to try with the external tool.

Thanks for your help, about the IE plug ins, i do have your two plug ins enabled. I have this plug ins on IE:
Adobe PDF link Helper, ArtOfTest.InternetExplorer.BrowserHelper.ArtOfTestBrowserHelper ArtOfTest.WebAii.Design.RemoteRecorder.RemoteRecorder, Microsoft Silverlight, Microsoft Web Test Recoder 9.0 Helper, MUWebControlClass, Research, XML Dom Document, XML Dom Document 3.0.
I already try disable all but the ArtOfTest ones, then i try by enable one by one the disabled ones but the results are always the same.
I'm going to try your application on a clean version of VS. I have some other plugins installed on it so that could be the problem. This is the complete information displayed on the about menu of VS i hope it helps:

I appreciate the extensive list you posted, and I installed the VS plugins that were there. Unfortunately, I still was able to see the Remote Recorder Toolbar. The IE plugins listed also did not cause any problems.
You could also try disabling or not using the 3rd party VS plugins while running WebUI Test Studio orreinstalling the product if you haven't already tried that. Please let us know how a fresh install on your machine or another machine works out.

Hi Nelson, thanks for your help.
Well, this is really odd and i have to be doing something wrong, it does not have any sense at all. I used a virtual machine with XP SP3, i install another version of Visual Studio 2008, in this case the professional one with SP1. So a machine with a complete different software (there is not a single program that is installed on both machines but IE7), i did the configuration steps of your XP videos but the result is the same, that is not logic.
When i press on the the "Launch page on ie for record", the IE opens, the record panel does not shows and there is a little icon on the task bar (A small A) that says "Excecuting test. Click here for more details". If you click on the icon it shows a legen that says "status:.. About X". It also shows a "program" on the program bars that says "Web Aii 1.1" but if you clinck on this nothing happends.
I do not know if this tells you something or not, the truth is that it is not working and i do not have an idea of what is wrong, thanks again for you help, i would appretiate if you could find what is wrong here.

After reviewing the issue some more, can I confirm which version of WebUI you have? Also, are you doing your testing exclusively for IE7? Would it be possible for you to upgrade to IE8? I was able to get the remote recording browser working in 2003 with IE8 and the latest WebUI build.
Please let us know if this is possible on your end. And there will be a new build of WebUI coming soon, so if these options are not viable to you at the moment, you can try the upgrade. We will test the build on our side against 2003 to make sure it works and let you know.

I am new to the test Web UI test world and am using the trail version and ran across the same problem. It worked on the first initial download but I haven't seen the toolbar since. Do you have a fix for this yet? The last post was in early Jul.
