I would like to offer a suggestion...
I think it would be very beneficial to have a "RadDocumentPaneGroup" which would only contain "RadDocumentPane" items. This container would ensure that the Panes within it would not be docked anywhere outside of itself. For an example of how this should work, see the SandDock controls. They have got the functionality exactly correct.
