I have been working with the SilverLight version of the RadChart to determine if it is a better solution than the AJAX implementation I currently have. I have 2 issues that are real problems right now. The charts I am generating have large numbers of points potentially 1 or 2 thousand. The performance is acceptable, however, the labels on the X Axis overlap. From looking through the forum it appears that there are other folks with similar issues and I get the impression that a LabelStep sort of property is planning on being implemented. Is there a plan to implement X Axis label rotation as well, and is it going to be part of the Quarter 2 release? Is the time frame somewhere around July? The charts look really good overall, and I would really like to be able to use the SilverLight charting as the solution.

Thanks for the help

Hello jdgoulden,

Thanks for the interest in RadChart! Yes, a lot of people want to see some features that help with the X-Axis label clutter. We have planned three solutions in mind that will help mitigate the problem:

-LabelStep feature: this will be an integer property which will allow you to display only every N-th label if the axis.
-StairLike labels: this will allow for displaying labels in a stairlike manner using two rows instead of one.
-Label Rotation: this will allow to rotate the axis labels by say 90 degrees and make them vertical to save space.

The bad news is that none of these are implemented yet. We are really pressed in time and will probably have to choose one of those solutions (for Q2). It will be nice to hear from our customers which approach is most useful. Feel free to share your thoughts on this.

Best wishes,

When using the RadChart in the ASP.NET AJAX product, I have had to use both the label step and rotation to be able to display large numbers of objects with a Time X axis. Anything more than a few objects with a DateTime XAxis is nearly unusable. I'm disappointed to hear that the solution probably won't be in the Q2 release, this is sort of a deal breaker for me being able to use the RadChart in my project. The performance improvements that you have made in this product vs. the AJAX version though are tremendous and had me really hopeful that I could use this.

Thanks

Hi jdgoulden,

We can commit that at least one of those features will be available in Q2. Also, you can massage a bit the the label format of the X-Axis to show dates with a shorter string and of course increase the width of the chart control as a work-around.

All the best,

I'll be wanting to plot large numbers of points, so from my point of view, if I had to choose just one, I think it would have to be the LabelStep.

I would have to agree with Steve that the LabelStep would probably be the most important feature with the rotation being a close second. In my case I am presenting data with a Date and Time so rotating the labels 30 or 40 degrees really helps. Thanks for the answer.

I also agree. The Label step would be my first choice with rotation being 2nd.

OK Guys,

LabelStep it is. Expect this feature for Q2!
