is there an example using a DocumentPane as a properties page as in Visual Studio? There are numerous types of properties that might appear in a list. For instance, one line might be a file picker, and the next line might be text, and the next line might be a color picker.

We don't have such example, because we don't have property grid control. Once we implement one we will ad such an example. For now you could just place a ListBox into the pane's content.
