I want to do something similar to the example #Chart/EmptyValues. There is a legend/datagrid to the left of the chart. When I looked at the code it appears the hard code the colors for the datagrid. is there a way to get the colors used in the chart to do something more dynamic.

You can use a custom palette brushes collection.
As reference please check this example.
If you need the default chart colors, we will provide you with the needed palette. Just let us know which Telerik theme [and series definition respectively] is used in your application.
