I downloaded the UI SL trial (Q1 2014), it has expired before I got to it, that may be the problem...
New SL project, Double click on RichTextBox, select word processor in wizard, next to all, get error msg
"The editing scope cannot be committed or aborted because a scope was opened after this scope was opened. Commit or abort editing scopes in the opposite order they were opened"
After that error is dismissed I get a null reference error in the designer and no code added to xaml.

Actually this is a known issue that is reproducible in VisualStudio 2010 and we have already logged it into our bug tracking system. I am afraid that at this point I cannot give you any time-frame when this problem could be resolved.
As a workaround I would suggest you to drag and drop the control in the designer instead of double clicking.
