Someone on my team used Blend to export the styles and templates for the combo. Then I made the necessary changes in there.
It would be much nicer not to need the 500 or so lines of code to maintain, I'd much rather just be abolt to assign the button a Style or a Template directly in the ComboBox xaml.

Hi Rob,
Indeed if you want to customize the clear button you need to use RadComboBox template. But keep in mind that you can customize the template, meaning you can shorten it. Just have to be careful not to remove any necessary parts, you can find more info here.
