Anyway to implement a Filtering DropDown control seperately

What I mean is that I have a some data in a tree view and/or grid view which I would like to filter on? The Filter should work with either the Treeview or Dropdown, so I would like to press a button and have my custom filter control show up with my filter options. Is there a way to implement my own Filtering Drop Down control?
