An Introduction to GraphQL With Eve Porcello Hide this title

On this episode of React Wednesdays, Eve Porcello (@eveporcello) gave a hands-on demo to introduce us to all things GraphQL. We learned what GraphQL is, how it works, and the best way to get started implementing GraphQL in your own apps.

It was a fun session as we also got in a lot of Q&A, so we also covered things like GraphQL subscriptions, authorization, schema management, and a whole lot more. This is definitely an episode to check out if you’re considering GraphQL.

And if you’re looking for a quick summary, I wrote up four things I learned about GraphQL from this stream on our blog.

Working in Large React Apps With Paige Niedringhaus

Working in large React apps brings up new and fun concerns. Like, how do you organize your files so your team can find things? How do you agree on which dependencies to use? And, how to ensure that tabs versus spaces arguments don’t ruin friendships?

Luckily, on this episode we welcomed Paige Niedringhaus (@pniedri), who has a ton of experience working in large React apps and teams at The Home Depot. Paige shared some tips & tricks she’s learned over the years, and demoed some of her tips for us!

Will Using React for Your Enterprise App Get You Fired?

On this episode of React Wednesdays, we welcomed Dragomir Răzvan (@razvandragomir), author of the recently viral article “I Almost Got Fired for Choosing React in Our Enterprise App”.

We used Dragomir’s article as a guide and chatted about React in the enterprise in general. Like, when is React a good fit and when is it not? What are some good practices to make React work better on large teams? And what recommendations does Dragomir have for developers starting new enterprise projects today?

Let’s Chat About Feature Flags With Flagsmith

On this episode of React Wednesdays, we welcomed the folks from Flagsmith (@GetFlagsmith) to come hang out and demo their service live!

Feature flags are one of those development concepts that seem simple, but can get complex really fast in real-world apps. So much so, that there are entire services devoted to help you manage these flags.

This was also a good way to check out how you use feature flags in your production apps.

Learning Volta with Chuck Pierce

On this episode of React Wednesdays talked with Chuck Pierce (@ChuckAPierce) about Volta, a “hassle-free JavaScript tool manager” that just hit version 1.0.

Volta was interesting to me because it’s built in Rust, which gives it a big speed boost over competing JavaScript tooling options that are almost universally built with JavaScript.

Chuck demoed Volta for us live, and we had the chance to ask questions. Check this out if you’re curious, or if you’ve ever struggled with managing Node.js versions across your applications.

Live Coding Fun With Tyler McGinnis & Michael Labriola

This was a fun one, as were joined by the one and only Tyler McGinnis (@tylermcginnis) and React Wednesdays returning champion Michael Labriola (@mlabriola).

We started by interviewing Tyler, asking him about how he got involved in React training, and how out exactly how he managed to get the ui.dev domain 🙂 Then, Michael live coded a blackjack app while Tyler & TJ critiqued his API choices.
