Hi Team,

We have purchased the telerik controls for silverlight and its working very well.

Have some queries on the version support.

The current version of telerik supports for Silverlight 3.0.

  1. Are the existing telerik control build forward compatible? Will there be any changes (minor/significant) in the interfaces of telerik controls targeted for Silverlight 4.0 from the build targeted for Silverlight 3.0?
  2. Will telerik controls targeted for silverlight 4.0 be backward compatible with Silverlight 3.0?

Please get back to us as soon as possible.

Thanks,
Krithika

Hello,

We don't plan any major API differences between the Silverlight 3 and 4 versions of RadControls for Silverlight. The Silverlight 3 version could be used in Silverlight 4 applications, but the oposite will not be possible, since the Silverlight 4 assemblies of RadControls use the newly introduced features of Silverlight 4.

Sincerely yours,

Hi,

Thanks for your response.

One more query.
  1. What is the support strategy for current telerik controls for silverlight? Do they, like Microsoft , support current + 2 older releases only?
  2. What is the plan for next telerik  control releases ie. What is the timeframe for major releases? Do you have major release planned every year? Is there a roadmap for it? If yes, when could be the next release?

Thanks,
Krithika

Hi Krithika,

- As you might already read on our site, RadControls for Silverlight and RadControls for WPF share common code base. Supporting several older Silverlight versions is a huge overhead (we have to fix problems in 4+ places - current Silverlight, previous Silverlight, older Silverlight, current WPF, previous WPF, etc.) so we usually provide only showstopper bugfixes for the previous versions of Silverlight. In two words, the new development is usually only for the current version of Silverlight and the previous versions receive only bugfixes for a limited time, usually several months, until the new version is widely adopted.
- We provide major releases three times a year, while between the major releases we usually push one or two service packs. Usually one month before each major release we publish a beta version, containing all new features. In addition, every week there is a so called internal build, that contains the latest bugfixes for the clients that need them immediately. The major releases are usually in March, July and October/November. Our March release, named Q1 2010, was published this week and there is still no official roadmap for the July release, but it will be online in a couple of weeks.

All the best,
Valeri Hristov
