Not answered Problem with report designer

Feed from this thread

    Hi,

    I have a problem with the report designer in the latest version of Telerik Reporting (2008_3_1209).

    Whenever I double click on a textbox to edit the value property I get the following message

    "Unsupported page unit"

    The designer is "invalidated" (replaced by a white rectangle with a red 'x').

    Don't know how to upload a screenshot, so I have temporarily replaced my avatar.

    BTW: I'm using VS 2008 SP1.

    Any idea?

    /BB

    PS: Editing the TextBox using the property window works!

    Hi Steve,

    i've investigated this a bit further. The problems does NOT seem to be related to

    - screen resolution (switched from 1920x1200 to 1024x768)
    - regional settings (switched from German to English)
    - video driver (switched from NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M to Standard VGA)

    Here is some more information about my system:

    Vista x64 SP1 (German)
    Visual Studio 2008 SP1  (German)

    Other Software:

    Telerik Open Access
    Visual SVN
    ReSharper 4.1

    Please help

    /BB

    PS: Did you notice the screenshot in my avatar?

    Hello Bernd,

    Thanks for the additional information. After further testing we were able to reproduce this on a Vista machine (was testing on XP yesterday), so it definitely has something to do with it. We've logged it in our bug tracking system and would investigate what is causing the issue.

    Your Telerik points have been updated as a token of gratitude for bringing this to our attention. Please excuse us for the temporary inconvenience

    I am also receiving this error after upgrading to the latest version today.  This happens VERY FREQUENTLY.  But I notice it often when switching between tabs, and switching back to the designer.

    My setup is Windows XP x64 with Visual Studio 2008.

    Hi Sean,

    We are aware of this problem but have not been able to further research on it yet. We would do our best to address it for the subsequent release of Telerik Reporting. For the time being, please avoid using tab groups and you should not experience the issue.

    Sorry for the temporary inconvenience.

    Hi Steve,

    I'm using the latest Telerik reporting version (Q3 2008), and i'm experiencing the same problem.
    It occurs when i open the report designer on any report. My testreport only has one textbox, if i double click on it, then the "unsupported page unit" issue occurs.

    Hi Hans,

    Thank you for the details that you have provided - we would surely have them in mind when investigating the problem. However can you confirm that you are using tab groups in VS or not? This was the only case in which we were able to reproduce the issue so far.

    No, i'm not using tabgroups, if you want I can sent you some screenshots or any additional info you might need.
    Can it be that it's a X64 related issue?
    Please let me know.

    I'm just trying the telerik reporting for first time.
    Downloaded demo usinge autoinstall.
    Windows Vista Ultimate - 32 bit
    Visual Studio 2008 Team System developer edition (with database edition also installed in same product).
    After fresh install of Telerik Report, I started first tutorial in TelerikReport - Learning Guide.pdf.
    In first example, when I reached the step of "drag textbox to header and double click" - first problem was there wasn't any
    textbox control.  -- Searched forum and found how to add the telerik report controls to toolbox - Added them to a new tab just for telerik reports (sorted on namespace column, and checked everything from telerik reporting, including two report viewers) . Dragged textbox to empty header area, double clicked and got the same "unsupported page unit" message.

    While still seeing bix X in design surface, I tried pressing report preview button.
    The report displayed normally.

    When I closed the design surface and re-opened it, The big red X is gone and the textbox shows up with its text.

    Hi Jim,

    We are sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble with our reporting product. To be honest you are the first one to report missing reporting items from the Toolbox of Visual Studio. So we have the following suggestions that would help us pinpoint why did that issue occur:
    Below is the XML you need to add to the devenv.exe.config file, which would turn on VS IDE tracing:

    <?xml version ="1.0"?>
    <configuration>
        ...
        <system.diagnostics>
            <trace autoflush="true" indentsize="4">
              <listeners>
                <add name="myListener" type="System.Diagnostics.TextWriterTraceListener" initializeData="c:\temp\DEVENV.LOG" />
                <remove name="Default" />
              </listeners>
            </trace>
        </system.diagnostics>
    </configuration>

    This file usually resides under C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE directory (don't forget to make a backup copy before modifying it). After you add this code to the devenv.exe.config, please start Visual Studio. This way the DEVENV.LOG would be populated and you can share its contents with us by attaching it in a support ticket. Basically it should have the following lines in it:

    Entering constructor for: Telerik.Reporting.VsPackage.VsPackage
    Entering Initialize() of: Telerik.Reporting.VsPackage.VsPackage
    Entering Dispose() of: Telerik.Reporting.VsPackage.VsPackage

    Also you can check your registry for specific entries at this path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Telerik\Reporting\ToolboxInstaller and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Telerik\Reporting\ToolboxInstallerCache. Those should exist and hold the version of Telerik Reporting you have installed.

    Finally the Unsupported page unit error is being investigated and we hope to be able to provide a fix for it for the subsequent release of the product.

    Please excuse us for the inconvenience and looking forward to your reply.

    Best wishes,
    Steve

    Hi Steve

    I am also getting the same error but I am NOT using tab groups. I'm using Q3 2008 on Vista 64-bit Ultimate.

    I find that by double-clicking the textbox control to edit, the big red X appears but also the text contained in the textbox is selected and editable.

    I've made the change, saved and closed the report then reopened it and found that the report is again viewable and changes had been made.

    Hope this helps in your investigation.

    Have fun

    Hi Steve H and Jim M :-),

    I must mention that my behaviour is the same as Jim's, but I forgot to say that I'm also not getting the toolbox for the controls.
    I had to add them manually too, so overall the issue seems quit consistent.
    I'll also run the diagnostics as Telerik's Steve requested, keep you posted,

    Kind regards,

    - Hans Sissing.

    you can add me to the list as well, same behavior

    Vista 64 Ultimate
    Visual studio 2008 SP1
    I'm also running ReSharper 4.1, don't know if that would make a difference or not.

    I did not get the "telerik reporting' tab in the toolbox, so I added it manually.
    As soon as I double click on a textbox I get the same error.  I also attempted to add a public property to the code behind of the report.  the property was just a business object I had (Plain old object) but as soon as I made the property public and switched back to the designer I got the same error.  However, I haven't been able to reproduce that scenario again, so it could have just been a fluke

    for anyone needing a quick fix to this, I downloaded an older version of the reporting package (Telerik_Reporting_2008_3_1105), and am not experiencing the issue.
    When was getting the error I was using version Telerik_Reporting_2008_3_1209

     I am now able to double click on text boxes without recieving the error.

    Hi Steve,

    I added the diagnostics to my devenv.exe.config, the result in the log is:

    Entering constructor for: Telerik.Reporting.VsPackage.VsPackage
    Entering Initialize() of: Telerik.Reporting.VsPackage.VsPackage
    AnkhSVN: Loading package
    Entering Dispose() of: Telerik.Reporting.VsPackage.VsPackage

    I also looked up the registry key HKLM/SOFTWARE/TELERIK : it does not exist on my machine,
    however the key HKLM/CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/TELERIK does exit with these contents:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Telerik]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Telerik\Reporting]
    "UpgradeWizardAutoStart"=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Telerik\Reporting Q3 2008]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Telerik\Reporting Q3 2008\Components]
    "AttachDb_SqlAuth"=dword:00000000
    "FolderShortcut"=dword:00000000

    Hello Hans,

    I just noticed that you are on 64 bit Windows, so the path in the registry should be different for you:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Telerik\Reporting. If there are 3 records for ToolboxInstaller it means the needed is already there, it just did not get applied in Visual Studio. To "force" it, you can run devenv /setup, choose refresh from the context menu of the VS toolbox or as last resort use the repair option of the Reporting installation.
    On the other hand if you have records for ToolboxInstallerCache, this means that our items have been already added to the VS toolbox and there must be some other reason for them missing. Still trying the options above should resolve the problem.

    Hi Steve,

    I already created the toolbox items my selves, by creating a 'Telerik' toolbox and selecting all dll's from the Telerik namespace to populate the items. That seems to work ok.

    Thanks!

    My last post was so that you can further help us identify what have caused the missing items in the toolbar in a first place and yes adding the items manually would work, but you should not have to do this extra step :)

    I am having the same issue with the text box. I create a new report, add a text box, when I double click it and get the big red X and a VS error "Unsupported page unit." Closing the document and reopening it gets rid of the big red X. This happens with a new document or a saved document.  (Note: I can edit the properties with the property dialogue box.)

    Add me to the list as well.
    I want to point out that I am using Vista Ultimate 32 not 64.
    I am also using the Q3 Demo. I have VS 2008 SP1.

    I initially was looking for the toolbox items, but after reading this,
    I tested the red x scenerio, and can replicate it.

    I know you guys usually add the toolbox items, so I wanted to
    make sure something wasn't wrong. Is this something that will
    have to wait till Q1 09, or will there be an interim patch?

    If you guys need more config info, I can provide it as I have not
    manually added the toolbox controls yet, let me know...

    Hi Chris,

    Please note that the Reporting items would be visible only when you are in the context of open Reporting designer. If you are on aspx page or winform, only the ReportViewer control would be visible and this is by design. Also make sure
    • that you have correct administrator privileges under Vista, which are required in this case.
    • Send us screenshots of the VS screen where the items are not visible and screenshot of the Choose Toolbox Items menu would be also required.
    • Send us the info from this post
    • To force them being added, please try the following and let us know if any has helped:
      • open VS cmd prompt and run devenv /setup,
      • choose reset from the context menu of the VS toolbox
      • use the repair option of the Reporting installation.

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Steve,

    Here's what I did:

    1. Ran vs cmd  devenv /setup
    2. I am guessing you ment reset toolbox as there was no refresh choice in the toolbox context menu.

    These 2 steps fixed the toolbox issue, I now see the Q3 Reporting tab in the toolbox.
    Unfortunately, it also removed my radcontrols tab, along with my ajax.net toolbox controls.
    It's not a huge deal, I just wanted to make sure you notified people to the effects if you recomended this as a solution.

    However, at this point I still have the red x when double clicking a reporting textbox.

    Upon tring to repair the reporting install, I got an odd error message:

    Failed to connect to SQL database. (-2147217843 master    )

    As I am unaware of any SQL connnection issues locally, I can't say what this is referring to...

    Also as a side note, I noticed something this time around when I went to load the demo project,
    It prompts me to run as administrator, which is not the case when I run any of my own solutions.

    I hope some of this is helpful...
    Chris

    Hello Chris,

    We are adding our toolbox items through the way described in msdn via vspackage and probably the missing items from your toolbox have been added in some other way or manually by you.
    Our demo requires administrative privileges by default and as mentioned in my previous post - so does the installer, and this might be the reason for the missing toolbox in a first place.
    The SQL error means that your user does not have an account in your SQL server. You can either start MSSQL as administrator and add your user with db administrator privileges or use the admin account to repair the installation. Either way, we do not remove the AdventureWorks upon uninstall, so the database should be there.

    All the best,

    Having the same "Unsupported page unit" problem that many have described in this post.

    I purchased a new laptop about a week ago and it is running a fresh install of Vista x64 Enterprise and VS 2005 (with SP1 and ReSharper installed) with the latest version of Telerik Reports Q3 2008 (DLL version 2.9.8.1209).

    Whenever I drag a textbox from the toolbar onto the report designer interface and then double click it to edit the text, I receive the error "Unsupported page unit."

    I am curious with so many people having this issue why it has not been resolved yet. Please advise. Thanks.

    Hi Steve,
    I see nothing in your previous posts in this thread about an SP2 release or an indication of when the fix would be available. All I see is "we are aware of the issue" and "we are working on it."
    Please forgive me for coming here and asking for about a fix for the product since for all intensive purposes it is currently unusable.
    I've read over this whole forum post at least a dozen times and I am still not finding it. Feel free to point it out to me where it is. Because until I asked I see nothing about an SP2. Why would I bother asking if you had already stated when the release was?

    Hello Nate,

    I am sorry for the created confusion - we get so many inquiries for the SP2 release date these days that I must have got the wrong forum thread. It also gets everyone involved (especially clients waiting) a bit nervous as we had the good intention of releasing it last week and even stated so in some threads.
    Indeed there is no mentioning of the service pack here, although after 30 posts one would think there would be :) The product is currently under heavy testing and we hope to release the service pack tomorrow.

    Once again, please excuse me for the confusion and if I have offended you in some way.

    Sincerely yours,
    Steve

    Hello everyone,
    I had the similar issue with both installs inssue in Vista 64
    (unable to install due to admin right) I Fixed by turning off UAC and reboot the system) in the User control.section.
    As for the SQL error, Install the program but donot install the examples until after you have a succesful install.

    Both problems seemed to have cleared up. I had this problem installing 2008 Q3 and 2009 Q1.

    Goodluck
