Breaking Up Big Apps with Michael Labriola

React is great at helping you build large apps, and as such, the framework is used to create some of the most complex applications on the web today. But size creates problems, and keeping your app loading quickly as it grows is a real challenge.

To help you with this, on this episode of React Wednesdays we welcomed back Michael Labriola (@mlabriola), who covered a variety of techniques for helping you break up your applications.

Live Coding a Demo Dashboard into a Real-World App

Ever work through a tutorial for some impressive React app, but once you try to turn it into something “real”, you keep running into wall after wall of unanticipated complexity? Us too.

On this episode, we welcomed Christian Pillsbury (@cjpillsbury), who took us through a demo React dashboard app with static data, and iteratively migrated it to use a RESTful API, and used some cool tech like react-query, suspense, error boundaries and more.

React Unit Testing Workflows with Eric Elliott

This was a fun one, as the one and only Eric Elliott (@_ericelliott) joined us to share his knowledge about all things unit testing. Eric Elliott is a Technology Product and Platform Advisor and the author of “Composing Software”. As co-founder of EricElliottJS.com and DevAnywhere.io, he teaches developers essential software development skills. He enjoys a remote lifestyle with the most beautiful woman in the world.

Eric and his team introduced us to his preferred unit testing workflow, and demoed it to us live. Check it out!

React Mental Models with Obed Parlapiano

My favorite thing about React is that every API is simple and there’s almost no complexity. Ok, maybe not. In reality, all of us have struggled to master concepts that are important to build the apps we need to build—whether those concepts are React features like props, state or hooks, or JavaScript features like closures and destructuring.

On this episode Obed Parlapiano (@ObedParla) showed us a useful method for learning new concepts and teaching them to others—mental models. Obed has created an impressive collection of React mental models, and explained his thought process behind them to us live.

Developer Advocate for KendoReact

Kathryn Grayson Nanz is a developer advocate at Progress with a passion for React, UI and design, and sharing with the community. She started her career as a graphic designer and was told by her Creative Director to never let anyone find out she could code because she'd be stuck doing it forever. She ignored his warning and has never been happier. You can find her writing, blogging, streaming and tweeting about React, design, UI and more.
