    Hello,

I'm trying to find information on your support for Visual Studio 2008. I've found some random forum posts on it, but no official announcement, blog post, nothing. Frankly I'm surprised given this is a major event and your one of the major .NET component developers, if not the best.

I hope you understand, I'm just looking for something, a note saying its being tested, something.

Hopefully this is taken a constructive, even though it is a little to the point.

I have a VS08 VB Project that is HEAVY with Telerik Controls.  So far everything is working well, since Today VS08 RTMed I would expect an update soon, but not real soon.  For the most part, the functionality is there, but you have to install some things manually, like the Toolbox.

It will be great to see added support for Linq Binding and updates to support the new things available in Ajax.  Binding XML Literals is another thing I would like to see extended.

    Hello all,

Visual Studio 2008 release is a key milestone for Telerik and we will make sure all customer requirements are covered with the new features of the IDE. We have been testing RadControls compatibility with Visual Studio 2008 (codenamed "Orcas") since early builds of the IDE: http://telerikwatch.com/2007/06/second-look-radcontrols-in-orcas-beta-1.html

The community is happy to see that RadControls are mostly working as expected (with a couple of minor exceptions which are not critical and will be fixed soon) in the new Visual Studio. Now that RTM has shipped, we are going through complete tests of all features. So far all RadControls behave as expected and we are not facing any major problems or limitations. Once the QA team is ready with the full report we will have an official compatibility announcement on the website. As we did with VS2005, we will have official support of VS2008 shortly after the IDE is publicly launched.

These are the key points we will support:

    VS 2008 Multi-Targeting Support
VS 2008 enables you to build applications that target multiple versions of the .NET Framework.  This means you can use VS 2008 to open, edit and build existing .NET 2.0 and ASP.NET 2.0 applications (including ASP.NET 2.0
applications using ASP.NET AJAX 1.0), and continue to deploy these application on .NET 2.0 machines.

    ASP.NET AJAX and JavaScript Support
.NET 3.5 has ASP.NET AJAX built-in (no separate download required).  In addition to including all of the features in ASP.NET AJAX 1.0, ASP.NET 3.5 also now includes richer support for UpdatePanels integrating with WebParts,
WCF support for JSON, and many other AJAX improvements. VS 2008 and Visual Web Developer 2008 also now have great support for integrating JavaScript and AJAX into your applications

VS 2008 Web Designer and CSS Support
VS 2008 and Visual Web Developer 2008 Express includes a significantly improved HTML web designer (the same one that ships with Expression Web). This delivers support for split-view editing, nested master pages, and great
    CSS integration.

    LinqDataSource Support
This control is a new datasource control for ASP.NET (like the ObjectDataSource and SQLDataSource controls that shipped with ASP.NET 2.0) which makes declaratively binding ASP.NET UI controls to LINQ to SQL data
models super easy. (this is only for flat data-binding -- there is no hierarchical binding with LinqDataSource yet)

    Sincerely yours,
    Ivo

The same issue in VS 2008 B2 remains in the RTM version.  When using the designer to drag controls and then switching to source mode, your HTML will be riddled with thousands (literally) of:

This only happens when I drag a Rad control on.  The standard .NET controls do not produce this behavior.

    Hi all,

We are indeed aware of similar problems in Visual Studio 2008 when dragging multiple RadControls from the toolbox. They are caused by the fact that all controls in the Telerik.WebControls namespace have different tag prefixes (radG, radM, radE, etc). A key requirement in VS2008 is that all controls in the same namespace have the same tagprefix. We have contacted Microsoft regarding this problem, but they were not able to provide a workaround for this issue for the official release of VS 2008 and .Net3.5.Therefore, we are changing all RadControls to a common "rad" tagprefix as of Q3 2007 (radG,radM, radE ... etc all become rad). Btw, this problem does not occur with RadControls "Prometheus" as all controls in Telerik.Web.UI namespace have a common "telerik" tagprefix.

Changing the tagprefix to a common one for all RadControls should address any similar issues with the VS 2008. (Changing the tagprefix manually will be a good workaround for now.)

Please stay tuned for the official VS2008-ready Q3 release which will be available in mid-December (about 3 weeks from now). If you find any other issues with RadControls in VS2008 RTM please do not hesitate to contact us -- we will address them ASAP.

Michael, RadControls "Classic" and "Prometheus" can be used side-by-side in both ASP.NET 2.0 and 3.5 applications. We have designed and tested “Prometheus” controls to seamlessly work with RadControls "Classic" and have not encountered any issues running them together in a wide variety of scenarios.

    Sincerely yours,

    Ivo

Will existing support contracts be extended for VS 2008 support? is there any documentation regarding upgrading to VS2008 with regards to support and the costs, if any? We are getting ready to purchase the ASP.NET suite (and Prometheus) and would like to know what options we would have when VS 2008 goes public.

    Hello Vinit,

All Telerik products will fully support VS2008 and ASP.NET 3.5 with our Q3 release in mid-December. As always, current subscribers will receive free VS2008-and-ASP.NET3.5-Ready updates. Everyone should be able to smoothly migrate to the new framework and IDE (we are currently creating a section in our documentation on how to use the new VS2008 and ASP.NET 3.5 features). Our key goal is to distribute only one version of our assemblies which work as expected in both VS2005 (+ ASP.NET 2.0/AJAX Extensions 1.0) and VS2008 (+ ASP.NET 3.5/AJAX Extensions 3.5). We want to keep things as simple as possible for all customers and provide them with the same experience in both versions of the IDE and framework.

More info on VS2008 and ASP.NET 3.5 from our Roadmap:
Visual Studio 2008 and ASP.NET 3.5 release is a key milestone for Telerik and we will make sure all customer requirements are covered with the new features of the IDE and framework. We have been testing RadControls compatibility with Visual Studio 2008 (codenamed "Orcas") since early builds of the IDE and the community is happy to see that RadControls are mostly working as expected (with a couple of minor exceptions which are not critical and will be fixed soon) in the new Visual Studio. Now that RTM is released, we are going through complete tests of all features - so far all RadControls behave as expected and we are not facing any major problems or limitations. As we did with VS2005, we will have official support of VS2008 shortly after the IDE is publicly launched --our full VS2008-ready release is now scheduled for Q3 2007 in mid-December which is about 3-4 weeks after Microsoft have shipped RTM.

These are the key points we will support with RadControls for ASP.NET (a full summary of what’s new in VS2008 and ASP.NET 3.5 is available on ScottGu’s blog):
    * Most of these new features and improvements are already implemented in RadControls over the past couple of months when we’ve been following VS2008 Betas and RC.

    VS 2008 Multi-Targeting Support
With VS 2008 you will be able to build applications targeting multiple versions of the .NET Framework. Apart from ASP.NET 3.5, VS 2008 can be used to open, edit and build existing ASP.NET 2.0 applications (applications with ASP.NET AJAX 1.0 as well), and continue to deploy these application on .NET 2.0 machines. Telerik customers will be able to easily build applications with RadControls targeting both ASP.NET 2.0 and ASP.NET 3.5.

    ASP.NET AJAX and JavaScript Support
With ASP.NET 3.5 you no longer need a separate download for ASP.NET AJAX. Besides all features of ASP.NET AJAX 1.0, ASP.NET 3.5 now has richer support for UpdatePanels integrating with WebParts, WCF support for JSON, and many other AJAX improvements. VS 2008 and Visual Web Developer 2008 also have great support for integrating JavaScript and AJAX into your applications. RadControls “Classic” seamlessly integrate with the new AJAX and JS improvements. RadControls “Prometheus” goes a big step further – the new generation of ASP.NET controls are natively built on top of ASP.NET AJAX and provide blazing speed and top interactivity relying on the new AJAX and JS improvements.

VS 2008 Web Designer and CSS Support
VS 2008 and Visual Web Developer 2008 Express now have a significantly improved HTML web designer (which is essentially the same thing that ships with Expression Web and SharePoint Designer). This delivers support for split-view editing, nested master pages, and great CSS integration. RadControls developers will now receive better design-time experience in the new design surface – you will be able to see changes in both control settings and CSS classes applied immediately with a WSIWYG preview.

    LinqDataSource Support
We now have a new datasource control for ASP.NET (like the ObjectDataSource, SQLDataSource, etc controls that shipped with ASP.NET 2.0) which makes declaratively binding ASP.NET UI controls to LINQ to SQL data models really easy. (This is only for flat data-binding -- there is no hierarchical binding support with LinqDataSource yet)

Up to now, everything seems to run smoothly with the RTM build, but we still need to make sure everything is working 100% with the RTM build. Stay tuned for our Q3 2007 release in mid-December and by then please do not hesitate to let us know of any issues you have faced with VS2008 and RadControls -- we will address them ASAP!

Just as an FYI. After converting to 3.5 I see an ugly flicker on the RadGrid when it first loads and also when paging. The control is loaded inside an ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel.

Basically what's happening is that it loads all the rows without applying column widths and then after 1/4 second the columns get aligned with their proper width.

    This looks very ugly...

Are you aware of this or should I open a support ticket.

    Thanks!

    Hi GroundSloth,

Can you please confirm that you are using the latest version 5.0.1 of RadGrid in your project? Is it possible that you experience the visual glitch during loading when having large number of columns displayed at once?

If this is the case, you may consider enabling the scrolling feature of the control or replace the MS UpdatePanel with RadAjaxPanel "Prometheus" and show RadAjaxLoadingPanel initially while the entire grid is loaded:

I noticed that when I use the "Manage Styles" View menu option, I see only Telerik controls in the window. All the different telerik controls on the page show in the Manage Styles css management window, but no asp controls show. Telerik takes over the window.

Tooltip control is not working with 3.5

Where is the download link to controls built with 3.5 ?

You claim testing is underway, where are the test versions so my site will work?

RTM has been out for awhile, yet no updated controls built with 3.5?

If I build them myself would that work?

The new RadControls are not working for me in VS2008. If I use the smart tags or the property inspector, "nbsp;" is inserted into my code stopping the control from rendering and half the time changes to properties do not actually change.

    Hello Zack,

Can you please verify that you are using the latest release Q3 2007 of our controls under VS 2008 RTM released at the end of November 2007? We have received several reports for this issue which should be no longer present with those versions of our products and the new Visual Studio.

If the problem persists, I suggest you start a formal support ticket and attach a simple project which demonstrates the discrepancy. We will test it locally and will get back to you with more info.

I think I have tracked the issue to poor uninstallation. I have just been downloading the zip files and updating the RadControls folder for the last couple releases. I just checked my GAC and Telerik.Web.Design has a version of 2007.1.626.0.

So, I am going to uninstall Q3 (and uninstall from the GAC if the uninstaller doesn't get it) and reinstall. Hopefully this will correct my design time issues.

I have no idea what is the problem now. The new rad tags don't work and I get errors like "Warning 1 Validation (): Element 'radchart' is not supported. C:\inetpub\wwwroot\Test\Default.aspx"

I give up. I'll submit a support ticket.

This is not a Telerik problem, its a VS08 Problem.

    Try running devenv /resetsettings

I have had to do this several times after installing components and extensions.  Its a pain to reset all your tweaks to the IDE, but it does fix the problem.  Another symptom of this problem is Intellisense disappearing (in VB) or the Designer not showing the controls properly.

    Hello CauBe,

We have announced full support for VS2008 and ASP.NET 3.5 with our Q3 2007 Release (from Dec. 18th). All previous versions can also be used with VS2008 and ASP.NET 3.5 but there are some issues fixed with the latest release.

We recommend using the latest Q3 007 Release if you plan on using VS2008.

There was supposed to be a new release that fixed issues with Prometheus and VS 2008 running on Windows XP. I could not get those controls to run properly  in that scenario. My support ticket game me a fix that didn't work and they told me that a patch was coming out mid January. Is that close to being ready?

    Hello,

The service pack release for "Prometheus" was released yesterday. The version number is 2007.03.1314. In order to install this release, you need to first uninstall the previous version (2007.03.1218).

If you experience problems with the design surface in Visual Studio 2008 with the latest release, you can try adding the Telerik.Web.UI.dll from the bin35 folder in the machine's GAC. If you do not want to add the Web.UI assembly in the GAC, you can copy it to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\PublicAssemblies\ folder.

I downloaded the update and installed. I threw the Telerik.web.ui.dll into the GAC but still continue to get the errors. The only component not giving me an error is the color picker. What have I missed? Below is the error I get. It seems to be roughly the same error for all controls.

We are still seeing a lot of issues w/ the Q3 SP1 release w/ control namespace issues and when editing a controls it adds litteral blank spaces.  As a result sometimes the designer change isn't made and you have to take out the blank space in the html.

Also the AjaxManager doesn't load controls w/ content pages created from masterpages.  Haven't even tried nested masterpages but guessing this doesn't work either.

    Any status on these items?

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hello Chris,

    Thank you for your question.

I'm not sure what you mean by "namespace" issues. All the new Classic RadControls apply one and the same TagPrefix: "rad" with the latest release, which addresses tag prefix mess up in case of dragging different RadControls in VS 2008 design surface. You need to change the tag prefixes in the old pages manually, though. The change will affect the new dragged and dropped controls only.

As to the other problems, I hope to see some improvements with the VS 2008 hotfix ScottGu recently announced, but other than that we will do our best to resolve the known issues for the upcoming Service Pack 2 of the latest release, scheduled for February 25th.

    Hi all,

The issue of Visual Studio 2008 adding numerous &nbsp's in the ASPX is indeed known by the dev team at Microsoft and has been fixed in VS2008 SP1. We have escalated this on several occasions and have worked with the dev team at Microsoft on addressing the problem: If you look at the list of fixes for SP1 you will see that Microsoft has already addressed that:
Issue Many NBSPs added and tag name corruption when editing a page that uses Telerik controls (popular custom controls)
Description When there are multiple register directives for the same namespace in different assemblies, multiple NBSPs may be generated in your page and your markup could possibly be changed incorrect. This can be seen when using some Telerik controls.
Resolution VS no longer changes your code incorrectly
    Link http://forums.asp.net/t/1185266.aspx

Actually, you will see that this issue in VS2008 affects not only Telerik but all other component vendors as well as Microsoft standard controls. The same problem is reported with other controls here and here. There are many other similar threads in other component vendor forums about this issue.

If you are still reproducing the problem with the VS2008 SP1 bits please send us more details on that. We will immediately look into your specific setup and address the case. We will need to know which Telerik controls you use and what versions; what else do you have on your page: other third party controls, user controls, master page, etc. It will be great if you can send us a sample project where we can reproduce that locally.

    Kind regards,
