OpenAccess ORM Free Edition is the FREE version of Telerik OpenAccess ORM - an Enterprise-grade ORM that does the data access plumbing in desktop and web applications. The community-driven Free Edition version provides the same functionality as the commercial version, but supports only free databases such as MS SQL Server Express, MS SQL Server Compact, Oracle Express, MySQL, Firebird, etc.

The Free Edition does *not* come with dedicated support, however, you may access and use the supplemental support resources:

We hope you enjoy this product and take full advantage of all the resources available to you.

Does the Express version support VistaDB?  The "features list" shows that it does, but the announcement and the download page don't list it.

Thanks,

Hello Eric Brunsen,

The feature list shows the product features and the databases for the full version.

The only limitation of the Express version is the sole support of free databases. Since VistaDB is not a free database, it is not supported by OpenAccess Express.

We have updated our corresponding webpage about supported databases.

Will Express support MSDE 2000 that is free?

The comparison charts do not mention MSDE 2000

I have a site where an earlier version of free ORM was working with MSDE and now since i have updated ORM its not!

Hi Paul,
This is true but due to technical reasons we are not able to support MSDE 2000 currently and because it is a relatively old and not so popular database we don't have it in our road map. I hope you will understand.

Just need to clarify.

Ok, so the free version ORM ( now known as ORM Express) no longer supports SQL MSDE 2000.

But if I buy the Telerik Premium Collection for .NET, will  the full version of ORM support SQL MSDE 2000?

Or is MSDE 2000 not supported at any level, only SQL 2000 ?

Thanks

Hello Paul,
We only support MS SQL Server 2000 (not the derivations as MSDE 2000) mainly because of technical reasons.

Is there a link to download the full setup file instead of the web installer?

I am having problems with the web installer. It installs the "Telerik Control Panel" and then hangs when installing OpenAccess ORM. I tried to reinstall and it hangs at "checking disk space" or something like that. Clicking "cancel" presents a confirmation dialog but nothing happens when I click "yes". Had to reboot to get rid of the installer dialog.

Another thing I noticed is the web installer is trying to install the SDK file (~80 MB). Is that right? Is the OpenAccess ORM a part of the SDK or is the file just misnamed?

Also, is there a way to clean-up this partial Telerik install gone wrong?

Hello Bill,

I am sorry for the trouble that you have encountered.

You can download the offline msi installation package through your Telerik account under the 'Manage products' | 'Trial downloads' section. By clicking 'Download' link you will navigate to a page where you can find both the product's automatic installation (msi package) and OpenAccess SDK installation package.

The Trial Web Installer is configured to install both of the above packages. You can decide whether you want both or just the product. The SDK contains all OpenAccess examples so I encourage you to install it too.

Regarding the partial installation I suggest you to try installing the msi packages without cleaning anything. If you experience any problems you can write us again so that we can provide you with further help.

Thanks for the help.

Before you responded, I tried the Control Panel again (the next day) to install OpenAccess ORM + SDK and this time it worked.

Just an FYI: the OpenAccess ORM and SDK are now on the Manage Products - Free Products page. I do not recall seeing them there before today.

Hello Bill,

I am glad that the installation of OpenAccess has gone successfully.

Starting with Q2 2012 the OpenAccess ORM product is a free product. This is the reason why you see it on the Free Products page.

If any future questions arise don't hesitate to write us again.

I have one problem - according to posts ORM free edition doesn't support full version of MS SQL Server.

But what I can do when I want to use only ORM with full version of MS SQL (ie. Standard or Enterprise edition) ?

How can I buy that full version of ORM (there is no that function on website) ?
How much it will cost ?

Second question is about download and instalation - I've downloaded ORM install file but it installs trial version - what will happen when trial expires (with ORM of course) ?

Best regards,
MWW

Hi MWW,

Initially the OpenAccess Free Edition didn't support all the databases the Commercial Edition does. However, in June 2012 we decided to make the entire functionality available in the Free Edition and all the databases are supported there with no limitations.

In case you also require priority support service, in addition we are offering such option for OpenAccess as part of the DevCraft collections you can purchase from our web site. Otherwise, with the Free Edition, you can only use the community forums as source of information and help.

Let me know if you need any clarifications on the current offerings or you would like to know other details.

Hi,

The grid controls which Telerik offers for various technologies are all part of DevCraft and do not have free versions. Here you can check the pricing for the separate UI control suites and DevCraft versions. Please find the complete answer to your questions in your forum thread.
