Hello all,

I installed WebUI Test Studio QA  Trial to test it and decide if i want to buy it or not. The recording functionality is working just fine but the I try to execute any of the recorded tests the  WebUI fails to open the IE and the operation is aborted. I get this in the Log :

'1/27/2011 2:29:38 PM' - Error encountered during execution.
------------------------------------------------------------
'1/27/2011 2:29:38 PM' - Error launching the runner. Error: System.TimeoutException: The operation has timed out.
   at System.IO.Pipes.NamedPipeClientStream.Connect(Int32 timeout)
at ArtOfTest.WebAii.Design.Execution.RunnerController.Launch(Int32 waitForReadyTimeout, String pathToRunner, Int32& runnerProcId)
------------------------------------------------------------
'1/27/2011 2:29:38 PM' - Aborting....

I tried using another browser (FF,chrome) to execute the tests but the result is the same.

The machine Specification is as follow :

- Hardware:
Pentium 4
CPU: 2.80 GHz
RAM: 3.50 GB, 2.79GHz

- Software:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Service Pack 3

- Browser:

Hello mosab,

This sounds like it could be a security setting problem. Please try these steps:

- Close down all instances of WebUI QA or Dev edition, Visual Studio, and Internet Explorer
- Click Control Panel
- Click Administrative Tools,
- Click Local Policies
- Click Security Options
- Change "Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares" from Enabled to Disabled

Let me know if that solves your problem.

Kind regards,
Cody

Hi Cody,

I hope you noticed that my machine has XP on it since I dont see the "Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares" in the security options policies (see attached). I tried enabling the  "Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users" but the problem is not fixed and the WebUI has the same behavior.

Hello Coy,
I am also having the same: System.IO.Pipes.NamedPipeClientStream.Connect problem.  I've read and checked the settings as posted on this forum.
I am interested what you found with Anas setup/configuration.  My setup is using a WindowsXP Virtural Machine.

Hi William,

I never got a response from Anas to my meeting request, so this problem remains unresolved. I'd be happy to have a GoToMeeting with you to study this problem.

Cody, thank you for your immediate response.  Tomorrow will be the webinar and unfortunately the only time I have to work with WebUI is in the evenings (Mountain Std Time - Denver, CO).  If you have time after the webinar, we could possibly look at it then.

Hi William,

You are one hour behind me. I am available almost anytime today up until 5pm Central Time (4pm your time). Will that time frame work? If so, what time would you like?

Hi William,

I tried to reproduce the problem on my XP Mode virtual machine, but no luck. It must be something specific to your environment. Any luck getting it installed directly on your main computer? Is there another computer you can use where you have unrestricted access?

Hello Cody,
I would like a follow-up on our conversation and investigation about using WebUI on a Virtual Machine over a VPN connection.  Were your developers able to make this combination of tools to work?
Thanks, will

Hello William,

My developers haven't tried that exact combination (VM through a VPN), that's actually my job, but I know of other customers of ours that are using this combination without any problems, though they aren't using the Windows 7 XP Mode. They're all using Hyper-V or VMWare or Citrix quite successfully.

As I previously stated, I personally tried running our software in a Windows 7 XP Mode virtual machine quite successfully as well. What more can I do for you?

Best wishes,
Cody

Hi,
We successfully installed the Test Studio package on our Citrix Server. But unable to publish it. We really appreciate your help
Is there any specific parameters to setup please?
What should be the Working directly?
Is it compatible with the Citrix presentation service 4.5?
Thanks

Hello Said,

I don't understand what you mean by "unable to publish it". Can you clarify what problem you are running into? Are there any error messages or logs to look at what is going wrong?

All the best,

Hello Cody,
Sorry for the late reply, I was on holiday

It looks like the issue is permissions. If I make the users administrators the application works.

If they are normal users we get the attached error. Please see the attached screenshot
Any idea please how we can fix it?
Thanks
Said.

Hi Said,

Please see this article on how to resolve that error message in your current version.

Your other alternative is to download our latest internal build, version 2011.1.817, which was released today. It fixes the startup and recording problems on a machine with a Non-Admin user account.

Hi Said,

Log into your account at www.telerik.com and find the "Internal Builds Downloads" link in the lower right (see screen shot). Choose Test Studio > 2011.1 and the "Available Downloads" area will populate with a link.

Hi Anthony
I've dowloaded and installed your last internal build. As results we don't get any error message , but we get instead just a blue screen and blank. Nothing else happens there. If we run it as administrator it works fine. Do you know what would be the problem please?
Is there any document or specific parameters for Citrix installation please?
Thanks
Regards
Said.

Hi Said,

Can you give us more details for the environment you are trying to run Test Studio? I spotted you mention something about Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 bellow? It this what you are using? On top of which Windows Server do you do that? And where exactly you deploy Test Studio in this scenario?
Also you mentioned that having admin rights for the session makes it run fine - is it correct? Why do you need it to run as not admin in this case?
Any specific information about your testing setup will help us analyze the problem and seek for solution.

Thank you in advance for your feedback,

Kind regards,
Daniel Djambov

Hi Daniel
Here are details of our environment:
We use the Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 and the OS for the Server is Windows 2003 SP2 standard edition.
We installed the last internal build as per your recommendations, using the standard install process . There is no any special setup applied , all standard paramerts ( or by default if you like).
Test Studio is being run as a "Publised application" within Citrix,
For the security reason, our QA tester does have the admin rights on the Citrix Server, this is the reason we need to run this session as a non admin user.
I'd like to add the Test Studio has been install by our Citrix Admininstrator.
I hope this helps to find a solution
Thanks
Best Regards
Said.

Hi Said,

Citrix Presentation Server is a good solution for your typical business application which is not dependent on hooks into the browser, mouse and keyboard (and even the operating system). Test Studio is a very advanced and complex application for recording and playing back tests in a browser window, simulating a real user interacting with that browser as well as verifying what is displayed in the browser window. What this means is that Test Studio will:
  • Install hooks into the browsers
  • Hook the keyboard interface
  • Hook the mouse interface
  • Hook the global Windows messaging queue
Test Studio does all these things so that it can correctly record and playback actions performed in the browser. Unfortunately the Citrix Presentation Server cannot support such a complex application.

Hi Cody,

If I understand well you wouldn't recommend to use TestStudio under Citrix Presentation Server.
This is a pitty for us, as this option allow us to eliminate the network latency and somehow to exclude the external parameters when measuring the application performance through our test cases.
I fully understand your point, even if it is a bite frustrating
Obviously we don't have that much experinece with TestStudio under Citrix, however independently from your valid statement above we noticed if we run it as admin, it still seems to correctly mimic the various steps within the test case, while it fails if we run it as a non admin user. So it seems somehow to be a permission issue there.
Any idea about the permission aspect et eventually what would case this issue please?

Thanks
regards
Said.

Hello Said,

No, I am sorry but I have no idea what permission setting could cause this problem. We don't have Citrix Presentation Server and really no way of obtaining it to study this scenario. And yes, officially we cannot recommend running Test Studio on it.

Hi Cody,
Well I'm not sure if the issue is really related to the Citrix presentation Server., but rather the Admin privileges
As per your recommendations I've downloaded your last internal build and and installed it also on my PC
I got the admin rights on my machine, so I've installed it as the admin; The TestStudio version is: 2011.1.817.0
If I run it as admin user on my PC, everthing goes well ( like we have under Citrix)
But If I rubn it as a non admin user, I always get an error message. I did it 2 different ways:

1. under an admin session, I rightclick on the Telerik icon, and then run as..
I'm then prompted to enter the user Id and password, I put a non admin user credentials and password, but I get an error message.
A popup menu entitled with "ShellRunas" comes and says: "Error launching the application. This operation requires elevated command".
2. I open a new session with a non admin credentials, and then when I run TestStudio, another popup menu comes asking to enter an admin password if I wish to continue

So it seems still to be a admin privilege problem.
Could you plesae help?

Thanks
Regards
Said.

Hi Said,

I have attached a short video demonstrating how we run Test Studio 2011.1.817 on a Windows 2003 R2 Server, in admin session with a user without admin rights. I have also verified it runs successfully when no admin session is started - application operates as expected again.

Unfortunately what you experience is probably some security issue or comes from some special user rights of the non admin user you are using and we are no aware of.

We are willing to do our best to help you and support you running the application in your environment, so please send us some video and exact details for the setup you are using to try to reproduce it locally and find a workaround or implement a fix.

Thank you again for the detailed feedback and looking for further details,

HI Daniel,
Thanks for the video,
Actually it you logg on locally as non admin user as shown within the attached video, yes it does work on a Wndow 2003 R2 Server
But if you do it remotely It does not work, as per my previous email. we got just a bule screen
I treide it again on my PC Vista SP2, and it did not work, I've reported the issue within my previous note.
I think we will install it on a local PC with the admin rights
Thanks
Regards
Said.

Hi Said,

Sorry for not being able to reproduce the specific problem you have. I logged in from home via VPN with my account, which is not administrative for the Server 2003 in which I did a remote desktop connection and still could work with Test Studio 2011.1.817 version.

There is something more specific for your setup or may be connected with the configuration of the Citrix presentation Server if you are still using it.

Anyway - once again sorry for not being able to help in your specific case, but hopefully you can use one of the workarounds to make it run locally or with admin privileges.

Kind regards,
