I installed JustCode today for the first time.  I currently have Visual Studio 2008 and 2010 on my system (Windows 7 64-bit) and the Just Code installer installed for both versions.  So far I have only worked with projects in 2008 and for some reason after the JustCode installation I can no longer switch projects without Visual Studio crashing.  I typically jump around between different solutions via the "Recent Projects" menu iunder "Files".  As of today, it crashes every time I do that, and it has NEVER done that before.

Can you let me know if this is a known issue or how I may troubleshoot this?  In addition to the details above, it may also be worth mentioning that I launch VS.NET as an Administrator in Windows 7.

Hi DonKitchen,

Unfortunately I can't reproduce the problem on my environment. Neither for VS2010 or VS2008 with elevated processes. It is something you should be able to do with ease and should not crash visual studio. Can you sent me more details of which version of JustCode you are using. Also if you get this same error every time it will be helpful to send me the logs of JustCode and Visual Studio so I can investigate more whats happening on your side.

1.Goto JustCode menu -> Options -> General -> Logging - > Enable verbose logging.
2.Start visual studio 2008 with "c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe"  /log
or for vs2010 start "c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe"  /log
3.Then you go and reproduce the crash. When that happens sent me both JC logs and VS logs.

For JC logs go to C:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Local\JustCode\Logs\
(change YOUR USERNAME with the one on your machine).
Zip that folder with all files in there

4.For VS2008 logs is c:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\ActivityLog.xml
For VS2010 is c:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ActivityLog.xml

Please sent me those files so i can investigate further. Sorry for this manual process. JustCode actually has internal reporting mechanism for errors but since its crashing Visual Studio i will need your assistance in order to investigate what's going on.

Kind regards,

I cannot attach the logs or a zip here, so you can download them from a share I made on dropbox.

Please let me know if you have any problems receiving this.

Hello DonKitchen,

Thanks for the effort sending us the logs. I looked at it and unfortunately no error information from JustCode is found. It seems the Visual Studio is crashing without writing anything in the logs. What we can do about it is you can check your System Event log about error events when that happens usually it says that devenv.exe has terminated and the module name that crashed it. If there is such event please sent us all the info from it.

One other thing i noticed is that you have CodeSmith installed. Can you try disabling it and then see if the problem persists. It may be something when both CodeSmith and JustCode are installed on the same machine that's causing the crash.

Anyway we are doing some stability improvements to the JustCode add-in that will be part of our next internal build I will encourage you to install it when its available. Hopefully it will fix the problem in your environment.

Hello,

Please make sure that you are using the latest version of CodeSmith Generator. We encountered similar behavior in a previous version of CodeSmith Generator 5.1 and 5.2; we worked with the Visual Studio team to fix this crashing behavior. Please update to CodeSmith Generator 5.3 to resolve this crashing behavior. If this dose not resolve this behavior, please uninstall CodeSmith Generator and we can all work on narrow down the root cause of this behavior.

Thanks
-Blake Niemyjski (Software Development Engineer @ CodeSmith Tools).
