Currently the functionality is not available in the Cordova core API. There is an enhancement request open however, that is still not done. At this point you should be able to accomplish this by creating a custom Cordova plugin, check the following post for inspiration.

Looks like this has been done now with an open source Cordova plugin that works on iOS and Android. Check out the link below.
