JustTrace Q1 2013 installation error

    I'm receiving an error while trying to install JustTrace.  I found this error in the log.

    Product: Telerik JustTrace Q1 2013 -- Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.  Action vim7AAF2C60C305D0792F9D6830128CF4C0, location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\VSIXInstaller.exe, command: /q  /skuName:IntegratedShell /skuVersion:11.0 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Telerik\JustTrace\Libraries\Telerik.JustTrace.VS.vsix" /admin 

    I've tried installations targeted at both VS 2010 and 2012 and the same error occurs, only difference being the path for the VSIXInstaller.exe and switches.  The above was taken from a log while trying to install for VS 2012.

    In my system, there is also the problem. OS: Win8 x64 IDE: Visual Studio 2012 Update 1

    I was able to get it installed.  I had to install just JustTrace with no VS integration.  I was then able to run the Telerik.JustTrace.VS.vsix after to get the plugins/integration with VS.

    Hi Craig,

    We are working on reproducing the issue and fixing it. To speed up our research, we need more information from you. Could you please open a support ticket for JustTrace and send us the complete logs from the msi installer? We also need the logs from VSIXInstaller. They are located in your temporary folder (to find it, type %temp% in Windows Explorer address bar) . They are named VSIXInstaller_{GUID}.log. Finally, we need to know if you have these products installed:

    • Visual Studio 2010
    • Visual Studio 2012
    • SQL Server
    • SQL Server Management Tools
    • Visual Studio Shell (Integrated and Isolated modes)

    Visual Studio 2010 premium
    Visual Studio 2012 ultimate
    SQL Server 2008 R2
    SSMS 2008 R2
    VS Shell 2010 Integrated

    Hi,

    We are testing a solution for this problem. We expect to publish a new build of JustTrace which fixes it next week.

    I would like to suggest a work-around until the fix is available: Start JustTrace_2013.1.220_XXX.msi manually. De-select both Visual Studio options and continue the installation. When it finishes, go to the installation folder of JustTrace (by default: C:\Program Files (x86)\Telerik\JustTrace\Libraries) and start the Telerik.JustTrace.VS.vsix file. This file will install the Visual Studio extension. Note that you will have to manually uninstall it from Visual Studio Tools / Extensions and Updates menu before installing our next public build!

    As of 4/2/2013,
    I've been trying to install this on my new W7-64 bit box with no luck. 
    Same error as OP.

    However, the work around posted above did work for me...

    All of our developers here are having the same issues. We cannot get the latest version to install, nor the previous which had been installed fine prior.

    I tried running the work around to install the Telerik.JustTrace.VS.vsix, but it fails with "The system cannot find the path specified. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070003"

    When I run VS2010, the JustTrace extension shows up on the extension manager, but there is no option to disable it or uninstall it.

    Is there a manual way to get this installed?

    This is such a shame too as for many versions JustTrace simply did not work and just recently with the last build before this it started working beautifully again. Now we have lost the tool completely.

    To assist you further, we will require some information about your environment. Please, confirm if you have any of the following products installed:
    • SQL Server
    • SQL Server Management Tools
    • Visual Studio Shell (Integrated and Isolated modes)

    If any of the above exists on your machine, please tell us its version.

    Also, we will need information about the Visual Studio(s) you are using. You can get this, by opening the "About Microsoft Visual Studio" from the Help menu inside VS. Please copy the information there and attach it to your next reply. Note that, we will need the about pages for all the Visual Studio versions you have (e.g. VS 2008, VS 2010, VS 2012).

    I don't have any instances of SQL server running on my machine. I do however have 2008 SQL Server Management Tools installed. I don't know what Visual Studio Shell (Integrated and Isolated modes) is? I do have VS2010, VS2008 and VS2005 installed.

    I've tried everything, unintalling old, using telerik control panel, uninstalling and then only doing base (no VS) then running vsix.  I only have Premium installed but it says it found professional too.

    @brian: A reply has been sent in support ticket with ID: 680055.

    @Ristogod: One thing, we can suggest is to check if there is an anti-virus issue, that is preventing the deployment of our extension:
    1. Completely uninstall JustTrace.
    2. Please, make sure your anti-virus is fully disabled.
    3. Next, you will have to install JustTrace with disabled VS options, as explained above.
    4. When it finishes, go to the installation folder of JustTrace (by default: C:\Program Files (x86)\Telerik\JustTrace\Libraries) and start the Telerik.JustTrace.VS.vsix file.

    There is a zero chance of possibility of turning off our anti-virus software. It is controlled by our corporate headquarters and even our local IT service technicians cannot bypass it.

    Despite that however, we were successful finally in getting JustTrace to install. We did so by going to C:\ProgramData\Telerik\Installer\Downloads and deleting all the installers there (first backing them up). Then we ran the Telerik Control Panel again where it redownloaded the installer for JustTrace. After that it worked. This makes no sense though because a binary file compare between the previous installer and the latest downloaded shows them to be identical.

    Regardless, this only led into further issues with the product. Some of the other developers have now started getting lock ups with Visual Studio after installing JustTrace, but were running fine prior.

    We decided to abandon the usage of the product terminating further use in an effort to avoid the loss of production that is attributed with using JustTrace.

    I haven't tried the proposed solution.  However, I went back to the 2012.3 version and am able to run JustTrace from it's own UI with no issue at this time.   Given the overall value, I'm not giving up.

    The proposal is to temporarily disable AV which I agree in most cases is not feasible in a corporate environment.  However, I assume it is possible for a few minutes while disconnected from the network for an install.

    We have changed the way our extension is deployed in the upcoming JustTrace Q1 2013 SP3. We believe the new approach is much more stable and such issue should not occur. You can expect the new version this week.
