Could not load file or assembly 'Telerik.Web.UI version etc etc'
Strong Name assembly could not be found etc, etc.
Imagine this scenario, you take a project off a collegues desk, You get the message as above, to overcome the problem you start a new project, then add the references required by Telerik(We have been using them for 2 years), then add the items from the toolbox (yes we unistall the old version and then reinstall the 'new bug free version' and all of the new items show in the toolbox), then build the project and test it. This results in a program that works (no code changes only new telerik controls).
At some time later in the next 8 weeks guess what ? 'Could not load file or assembly 'Telerik.Web.UI version etc etc'' start loop again, now this does not happen with the MS Controls, or the Infragistics controls or the many others
Instead of rushing out new features, advising the customer on an almost monthly basis the 'problem is fixed in the new version', 'have you checked the web.config' etc, why do you not just sit down and handle your module responsible for the licensing of the 'paid for product'!
I have been so pleased, that I have slowly been working through our UI projects and replacing the Telerik based UI with Actionscript 3 coded controls and Flash. I did not want this work this year but the work seems to provide a robust, stable platform.
Conclusion
I dont think that I will be renewing my subscription.

Hello John,

Let me introduce myself first - my name is Stefan Rahnev and I am Technical Support Director here at Telerik.

The error you receive is due to mismatch of the strongly typed name of the Telerik assembly or http handlers for the RadSpell/RadUpload/RadScriptManager/RadChart in the web.config file/page Register directive. The most common case is the first (version mismatch in the web.config file) when you upgrade your RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX to a newer version without changing the version number.

This has been reported several times in our public forums/support tickets and I can assure you that we have paid attention to this detail. Based on this feedback from people which are using our controls, I am happy to inform you that we found a way to register the http handlers/Telerik.Web.UI.dll (using the Smart tags of the corresponding controls) in the web.config file of a web site/web application project without the necessity to add strongly typed name which includes the exact version.

This is already a fact in the latest release 2008.3.1314 of RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX (Q3 2008 SP2) and I encourage you to try it out. For previous versions, if you use the http handlers/Telerik.Web.UI assembly registrations outlined in this KB article you should avoid the exception as well.

We will do our best to keep you as a customer and improve your experience with RadControls. We always value customer feedback and we strive to constantly optimize every aspect of our controls.

Please let us know of any other points you want us to improve on. We will gladly work on them.

Kind regards,
Stefan Rahnev,
Technical Support Director, Telerik

Hi Stefan
Thank you for your reply your concern is appreciated,
after 2 years we now find that the 'version' problem has been fixed.
It is not only the versioning that is a problem, here is another 'random' example(from your RadControls Manual).

Closing sliding panes

There are a number of ways the user can close a sliding pane that is expanded:

  • A sliding pane closes when the user clicks the collapse button in its title bar.
  • A sliding pane closes automatically when the user opens another sliding pane in the same sliding zone.
  • If the ClickToOpen property is False, a sliding zone closes automatically after a brief delay when the user moves the mouse off of the sliding pane and its tab.

What this fails to mention is that if the ClickToOpen property is set to true, the same behavior takes place. This link was the look up to a question on your forum asking 'how to keep the pane open', and this is a recurring theme in your help forums.

I have just had the delight of maintaining a project which uses telerik aspnet ajax.
Imagine my suprise when the telerik toolkit dissapeared and could not be recovered!
so I downloaded the latest version which has several enhancements?
I was going to attach the screen dump, but this is not available on a forum posting.
You will no doubt be familiar with the contents of the error message raised by the intall shield installer.
It reads
Error 1335
The cabinet file 'data1.cab' required by this installation is corrupt.!
It takes a real engineer to build an exe file that creates a corrupted cab file.
You will no doubt be able to trace ovr the last 2 years multiple instances of  'the download is corrupt!' and multiple excuses as to how this is possible.
I am looking forward to being able to upgrade all of the work that has been created over the last 2 + years to a 'non teleriked' solution and it is with real regret that I have to write this as the toolkit offered so much promise,
In despair
John

Hi John,

Please accept my sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused.
This is a general Windows Installer error and it might be the case that the download was corrupted. Can you try downloading the file again?
Could you please check if the suggestions in this KB article and this forum thread help?

We have also released a brand new installer which has several improvements over the current installer. Please find more details in this blogpost.

All the best,
Ivo
