When I raise a validation error manually on this control I get a red tooltip... all good.
But when I click on the submit button (dataform), then I get a validation error due to this field being required I get no tool tip, or any field "highlighting".
Why the different behavior under these two scenarios?
Hopefully I do not need to manually fire the validation...

Have you checked out our online example. It exposes a similar functionality as yours. You are free to reuse all of the source code. Let us know if you are facing any other problems.
