Edit PanalItem Text from javascript?

I am working on a project where I have a fairly "Outlook" style UI.. I would like to do a simple AJAX call to find out if there is anything pending for a given section then change the PanelItem Text accordingly.. This would be on the first Level PanelItems (the ones you click on to contract or expand).. I would also like to do this for an interior Item, but I think I can handle that with an Item template.. Its the first level panels that are giving me heartburn right now.

never mind.. I found the answer to my own question by being a touch more diligent with the documentation.. below is a link to the docs that helped (a mixture of how to find an item and how to create an item both on the client side)..
