I have taken over the design of a website (webpage) which has some of the RadControls (ASP.Net AJAX) in it.  However, I didn't have a copy of the Telerik Web UI on my PC so I downloaded and installed the latest (msi) trial version.

My problem is now I've installed the software on my pc, when i open the website (for design) in VS2008 i get the following error message(s):

"Failed to create the designer Telerik.Web.UI.(controlname) Telerik.Web.UI version=2009.3.1314.35"

In other words (I think), the version used on the VS2008 website is older than the one I've downloaded and installed.

How do I fix the error in displaying the components in design view in VS2008?

Thanks and I hope it all makes sense.

After installing the software and reopening the website in VS2008 I now get the following error:

Unknown server tag:[controlname]

Please help!

Hi Matthew,

The most probable reason for the broken design time is that you have wrong version of Telerik.Web.Design.dll in your web site's bin folder.

I guess that after you installed the latest RadControls for ASP.NET Ajax you upgraded your website to use this latest version. If not then go ahead and upgrade it.

Now open your web site's bin directory and make sure that Telerik.Web.Design.dll and Telerik.Web.UI.dll assemblies have the same version (2010.3.1109 in your case). If this is fulfilled then rebuild you web site and see if the design time is fine.

Do you mean replace the current controls on the website with the new updated ones?

Hello Matthew,

By upgrading your web site I mean to update the reference to Telerik.Web.UI.dll that is used by the web site. The easiest way to do this is using the Upgrade Wizard that is part of the VS Extensions for ASP.NET Ajax.

Hi Matthew,

Can you please, check the following folders for a copied older version of the Telerik.Web.UI assembly?

[VisualStudioInstallDir]\Common7\IDE
[VisualStudioInstallDir]\Common7\IDE\PublicAssemblies
\[VisualStudioInstallDir]\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies

Please, close Visual Studio and delete the instances if found. Then, load the IDE again and check the design time.

Let me know if that helps.

Kind regards,

There are no copied older version of the Telerik.Web.UI assembly in the foldersyou mentioned.

What's the next step?

I really need to get this working.

Thanks

Hi Matthew,

Sorry for the error first. I'll do my best to help having the problem fixed asap.
All-right, can you ensure you have Visual Studio 2008 SP1 installed?

If you have it, can you download the appropriate archive and run the bat file as described in the Error rendering control (Unable to cast object of TypeA to TypeA) forum post?

As a final step (if this still fails working), can you pack your project and send it to us for review? Please, open a formal support ticket so that your code remains private.

Hi guys,

Just to add some information to the issue, this is related to a precompiled website, which is having design time issues.
A possible download of the older RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX distribution could've fixed the problem.

@Matthew, let us know if everything is fine now.
