Hello Marianne Seggerman,
I was able to replicate the issue only in Opera 11.52. In Safari 5.0.3 the control worked as expected.
I have forwarded your report to our developers for further investigation. I have also logged a bug in our Public Issue Tracking System (PITS). You can follow its status
here.
All the best,
Martin

Hello Marianne Seggerman,
Note that the issue is already fixed and should be available in the Q3 2011 SP1 release that you can download from your account. Please give it a try and let me know whether further assistance is needed.
Kind regards,
Martin

I can report that this is now fixed - Opera zaps #'s and $'s in the numeric text box, same as all the other browsers (IE,Firefox,Chrome, etc)
the sporadic problems in Safari was from an unrelated bug in Javascript
