We are excited to share with you all the new features coming to Test Studio with its first major release for this year. R1 2012 brings in load testing capabilities, exploratory testing tool, integration with HP Quality Center and Defect Tracking Systems, and more.

  • Load/Stress Testing: How responsive is my site when under different load conditions? How stable is my site when lots of users have been hitting it for days? How many users can my site support before it crashes? The just released Load Testing functionality of Test Studio gives you the answer to all these questions. We focused on the ease of use from configuration to setup to execution. Get ready for a simple, intuitive user interface and easy setup and diagnosis of issues.

    A few highlights:

    • The new load testing functionality integrates seamlessly with our current Test Studio offering thus allowing customers that are familiar with our functional and performance testing to make easy transition into load/stress testing.
    • You can use multiple channels to create load tests (existing functional tests, Fiddler logs, etc.) or capture them yourself.

Multiple channels to create load tests

    • You can run performance and load tests at once. Test Studio’s load testing leverages the existing infrastructure of the Performance Testing feature, while providing virtual user simulation and metrics about the responsiveness of the server. You’ll be able to easily run a load test and a performance test simultaneously to see how a specific one-user experience performs when a server is experiencing high load.
    • You’ll get live results data while your tests are still running and safe storage of your test results in a single database to facilitate integration with your custom apps and reports.

      Get live data results

    • There are no limitations of one core per load agent. Test Studio’s load agents are very proficient at making use of multi-core, hyper threaded CPUs in order to generate a high user load. This greatly reduces hardware/system resource requirements and makes it easy for load testers to stand up a grid of agents without building up lots of new virtual machines to host the agents.
    • We introduced a single VU license type. Test studio offers affordable Virtual User packages, designed to fully fit your load testing needs and only one type of Virtual User license, to cover a range of technologies and protocols (e.g. GUI, web, http, .NET, etc.).

  • Exploratory Testing: With R1 2012 we also introduced another tool – Test Studio Explore - to help testers be more efficient in doing exploratory testing. Test Studio Explore is an easy to use in-browser extension that allows you to send ideas and feedback to your team members or report bugs directly from your application, while you are browsing. Attach screenshots and annotations, share your feedback via email, or export it to Word and PDF. It’s also seamlessly integrated with our brand-new bug tracking tool.

    Exploratory Testing

  • Defect Tracking Systems integration: We have facilitated bug-logging from Test Studio into defect tracking systems. The built-in bug tracking tool integrates with Microsoft TFS & Telerik TeamPulse to help you send bug reports directly to your working project. Submit a bug by sharing a failed step from the test recorder or the visual debugger, or drill down from the results menu. Bug tracking can be set up to send automatic reports to your preferred project.

  • Enhanced HTML Test Automation: With R1 2012, we took Test Studio’s capabilities to build HTML automation to the next level! Now you can deal with common pain-points like automating and handling HTML grid scenarios, dealing with automatically generated IDs that are popular with JQuery and other JavaScript frameworks, and enhancing our Ajax request detection.
  • Enhanced Test Automation for Kendo UI apps: Are you already building rich JavaScript applications with Telerik’s tool for modern cross-platform web applications – Kendo UI? Then we’ve got you covered with the just-released translators for Kendo UI web widgets. The latter abstract out the control specifics thus helping testers quickly and easily build automated tests for complex, widget-based apps. We’ve got translators for some of the most important Kendo UI web controls such as Calendar, Grid, Menu, Treeview, Panelbar, Tabstrip, Menu, Listview, and more. Check out Kendo UI web widgets

  • Integration with HP Quality Center: We know many of you have Quality Center deployed in your organizations and asking you to make the switch to a different system is not an easy or trivial task. In this release we enabled existing Test Studio customers to push their tests and test results in Quality Center so they can leverage their existing QC process for any tests built in Test Studio.

New Features in R2 2011 (September 28, 2011)

We are excited to share with you all the new features coming to Test Studio with its second major release for this year. R2 2011 brings in some really nice surprises – performance testing capabilities, support for manual testing and HTML5 are just for starters.

  • Performance Testing: How responsive is my application? What are the bottlenecks in my application? Is my app performing better or worse with each build? These are all questions we provide answers to with our new Performance testing functionality. Read a blog post on why do performance testing. As part of the R2 release, Test Studio includes the capability to construct robust UI Performance and Application Performance tests that offer an unparalleled insight into the performance metrics of your application.

    Performance Testing Overview

In a nutshell, here is what Test Studio offers:

    • Performance measuring & benchmarking: Take a functional scenario and measure each step’s execution time. Measure not only the total time but also server processing time, network latency, and client rendering time. You can then create benchmarks that you can compare each run against for regression detection or goal setting.
  • Historical view and comparison: View the historical performance of your tests and compare two different snapshots to help identify where the regressions are happening.

    Compare two performance runs

  • In-depth analysis: Trace your code at the step level to pinpoint the exact line of code that is causing the delay. Test Studio allows you to see the requests made from the server, how long they take, as well as what bandwidth is used. Each step of the performance run is represented as a block in the top horizontal bar. You can drag the entire selection area to get details on a custom interval.
  • Manual Test Type: Test Studio's new Manual Test Type makes manual test creation and execution more organized and productive than before. Execution results get rolled up into reports that offer consolidated views of project quality. Bring your manual test cases into Test Studio where you can manage them, record results, and even create "fast forward" automated steps to get rid of tedious repetitive tasks. Test Studio provides a simple and intuitive way to create manual tests and eventually transition some or all of its steps to being automated.

    Manual Test Runner

  • Create and import manual tests:Test Studio now allows users to add manual tests next to their automated tests in the project. The manual Test Explorer helps you craft your tests by writing your steps from scratch. Copy/paste and reorder your steps by using drag and drop. You can also enrich your manual tests by adding screenshots, description or test requirements. Import all your test suites to Test Studio with a few mouse clicks.
  • Manual test execution: Thanks to the built-in manual test runner you quickly execute the test you just created/imported. As soon as you launch the runner you can pass/fail steps, capture images and navigate the tests in the run.
  • Convert manual to automated tests: Manual test execution gets faster with Test Studio's fast forward feature that allows for mundane and repetitive steps to be automated. What’s more, you can have an entire manual test converted into fully automated test – you just need to run the manual test with the test recording feature turned on.
  • Bug capture and reporting:Manual test run results get rolled up into comprehensive reports that offer consolidated views of your project’s quality trends. If your project is connected to a scheduling server, you can publish manual run results to the server and retrieve the latest results that your team members have already run.
  • HTML5 Support: With R2 Test Studio also adds a number of translators for common HTML5 tags.

    Support for HTML5

  • Run your test against all browsers at once:Users can now concurrently run a test list against all major browsers: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Chrome. Support for the latest Firefox v7.0 has also been added. Support for Firefox 7
  • Simplified test execution on remote systems: Test Studio has dramatically simplified recording and execution by no longer requiring administrative privileges on our supported platforms. Remote execution servers can run as non-administrative users, accelerating total execution time by enabling test suites to be run simultaneously across multiple systems.
  • One product, no add-ons or different SKUs:We at Telerik always aim at simplifying our product licensing structure and avoiding complex pricing models. Test Studio has consolidated multiple features into a single SKU, providing a comprehensive solution that includes both functional (automated and manual testing) and performance testing capabilities. Telerik Test Studio will retail for the same price as before: $2,499.

    • Firefox 5 support

    New Features in R1 2011 (May 2, 2011)

    • WPF Test Automation: With R1 Test Studio adds support for building test automation for WPF applications. Not only the underlying test automation framework ships with out-of-the-box support for writing tests for WPF-based apps, the new Test Studio allows users to record and play WPF tests with just point and clicks – no coding required! Worth mentioning is the fact that Telerik Test Studio has been originally built on WPF (using Telerik WPF controls) which helped the team amass profound knowledge of the platform. Even more, Test Studio has been extensively used internally by Telerik WPF product teams in perfecting our XAML components.

      WPF Test Automation

    • Support for WPF controls: Naturally, along with support for WPF testing, Test Studio R1 also ships with translators for pretty much all of the generic Microsoft WPF controls as well as most of the RadControls for WPF. Similar to the built-in extensions for testing RadControls for Silverlight and ASP.NET AJAX, the WPF control translators enable customers to create regression tests for apps built with Telerik controls as easy as possible. Each translator is responsible for processing the respective control actions (click a button; check a checkbox, etc.).

      RadControls for WPF Translators

    • TeamPulse integration: With R1, Test Studio comes with support for Telerik’s agile project management solution – TeamPulse. The integration with the agile tool enables linking between user stories and acceptance test criteria in TeamPulse to functional tests within Telerik Test Studio. Thus users can further facilitate business owners – testers’ communication by bringing transparency to converting requirements into tests.

      TeamPulse Integration

    • Enhanced Browser support: With R1 2011 Test Studio adds support for Internet Explorer 9 and Firefox 4.

      Reporting functionality

    • New FindExpression UI: Test Studio R1 2011 also features a richer and simplified UI to edit find expressions and debug find errors. The FindExpression builder now gives users an overview of the element, which and how many tests this element has been used in, as well as quick view of the element in the DOM Explorer. Customer can choose among various attributes in order to validate the element.

      New FindExpression UI

    • Reporting functionality:  Telerik Test Studio’s reporting feature is also being significantly upgraded and expanded. Now users have the ability to explore test list results over time, export reports in common file formats (as image or html), and leave comments within reports. R1 introduces enhanced visualization of test results through interactive graphs and charts. Users can now generate more meaningful graphs that support drill-downs, as well as having single test list results displayed in easy-to-read pie charts. With this expanded functionality, spotting test pass/failure trends and identifying weak spots in applications being tested is swift and effortless.

      Reporting functionality

    • Lock the recording surface: While building tests for complex animations and visual effects that tend to alter their behavior on mouse hover, the recorder now allows users to lock the recorded UI by pressing the “scroll lock“ key on your keyboard. In this “freeze mode” users can take the time to build verification for any existing element.
    • Simplified licensing: Now users can activate and deactivate their Test Studio license with a mouse-click from either their Telerik client account or the product itself. This aims at facilitating the work of customers who’d like to use the license both on their office machine and their personal computer at home.

      Simplified Licensing

    • One product, no editions: As of this release, Telerik Test Studio features a greatly simplified licensing structure that avoids complex pricing models. Under the new licensing model, multiple products have been condensed into a single SKU, providing a comprehensive solution that includes both web and WPF testing, TeamPulse integration, and Visual Studio plug-in. New pricing has also been introduced, reflecting the suite’s streamlined licensing. Telerik Test Studio will now retail for $2,499.

    Enhancements

    Test Scheduling
    • CommandLine support: Export your test results into the scheduling server using a command line.

    Enhanced Silverlight Test Automation
    • With R1 2011 Test Studio also adds support for all Microsoft Silverlight 4 controls as well as translators for more controls like SL Toolkt's TreeView and AutoCompleteBox
    Test Results Viewer
    • We also added drill-down support for loops/test as steps. If your test result includes conditional logic steps once you double-click it you will be able to go a step further in the results analysis.
    • From your test results screen now you can instantly open the entire test in the Test Explorer with a mouse-click.

    Test Explorer
    • In addition to the current conditional logic options we also added “Wait” verifications.
    • Auto-Scrolling: if you’d like to drag a certain test step to the bottom of your test, we’ll automatically scroll your screen to facilitate the action.
    • Run From Here: R1 2011 allows users to execute a test from/to certain test step or to simply run a selection of steps.
    • Limit step execution by browser and version: With R1 clients will be able to limit the step execution not only by browser but also by browser version. The step execution browser version constraint is customizable by the new ‘RunsAgainstBrowserVersion’ and ‘RunsAgainstBrowserVersionCompare’ properties.

    Test lists
    • With Test Studio R1 users are now able to select multiple test lists at once and queue them for execution.
