  In the application I am writing, if you enter an invalid date I want the old value to be presented when you leave the field. Right now the default behavior seems to be to clear the field.
  
  In other instances I would like to preserve the bad data and highlight the box in some way

  You can use the ParseDateTimeValue event to handle this scenario. For more info on how to use the event you can check this help article.
