We have TFS 2013 and are just begging to evaluate products and the WIM looked interesting but it's telling me I need to install TFS 2010 explorer.
Is there a workaround or a compatible version?

Hello Alex,
You need TFS Team Explorer 2012 to be installed on the TeamPulse server in order to synchronize TeamPulse with Team Foundation Server. There is no workaround about that.

so 2013 team explorer wont work i take it?

Sorry to say, but we are not extending any functionality of the Work Item Manager nor adding support for the TFS new editions.
