Why is the test scheduler in the Dev Edition install if it's a QA only feature?

Hello Steve,

The test scheduling is actually part of the Execution Edition, which in turn is common for Dev and QA. You can only schedule test lists with QA Edition though (the UI from the TestLists view).

Please let us know if you have further questions.

Hello Steve,

Thanks for writing.

The Developer Edition can optionally be used as an execution or scheduling server. While most users setup a separate machine with our Runtime Edition, we offer you the flexibility to utilize an installation of any WebUI product for execution. That said, all execution must scheduled via the QA Edition.

All the best,

Hmmm, what do you mean (or am I confused :)

So the dev edition can be used to run scheduled tests...but unless you have the QA edition you can't run the scheduled tests? (w/out external software)

Hello Steve,

I am sorry for the confusion. I will do my best to clear things up for you.

  • The Scheduling Server maintains a database of tests scheduled to be run. It is used primarily for coordinating tests to be executed by Execution Servers. It has no UI beyond basic configuration.
  • The Execution Server talks to the Scheduling Server awaiting instructions to execute a specific test at a specific time. It has no UI beyond basic configuration.
  • The QA Edition has the UI for actually scheduling a test to be run. It communicates with the Scheduling Server to add tests to the schedule which will then be executed by the Execution Servers.
  • The Dev Edition does not have this UI, which is why you cannot schedule tests to be executed by Execution Servers, even though the Dev Edition comes with the Scheduling Server and Execution Server components.
Does that clear things up for you?

Best wishes,
Cody

Yep, no I get all that...but why include it in the dev edition if we can't use it to schedule items?

Are there plans to give it to us eventually?

Hi Steve,

We included both the Scheduling Server and Execution Server as part of the Dev Edition specifically for customers that are utilizing both editions in house. In this setup, users can optionally use their Dev Edition machine as a Scheduling Server and/or Execution Server as needed. At this time, we do not have plans on our road map for the inclusion of scheduling directly from the Developer Edition.

All the best,
