Wondering if this is built-in functionality.
I don't mean navigating by usign the arrows on the keyboard, that works. What I am looking for is a way for a user to quickly go to an image if they already know the name by typing the first letter of the image name. For example, control is loaded with 500 images and the control is currently positioned on number 5. The user knows that he wants to view the image called "xylophone", I want him to be able to type the letter "x" on the keyboard and see the coverflow control navigate directly to the first image that starts with "x".
Is this type of functionality builtin somehow?

No, we don't provide you with a built in functionality for this. As you probably know, we are developing a new version of the control that will have a beta release soon.
